Too far away from exchange

Hi guys!
I have telewest broadband,tv and phone. MY girfriend lives in south yorkshire and shes on a hillish road. her road hasnt had cable laid as the exchange is too far away?? anyway shes on bt at the minuite and the exchange is too far away as well so she has really bad speeds.

is their anything we can do? they really want telewest/ntl in their area. like who could we get in contact with? its the S64 area of south yorkshire.

Unfortunately if an area hasn't got cable, it is extremely unlikely that new cables will be laid. The costs are too high. Indeed one house can have service, but the neighbour hasn't, they wont run the extra cable if the duct isn't there. The Cable Co's are concentrating on trying to keep their existing networks maintained and "improved".

It's sucks, is probably against the terms of the original frnachise to provide cable, but hey, what can you do when the cable co's have changed hands and effectively gone through bankruptcy.

Damn! i remeber them laying the cables round here its everywere! you just follow the blooming new tarmac they laid :p. that is a pain what if we got wireless connectin at the top of her street in one house and got a massive ariel.(that goes 2mile at least) would the wireless router in her house pick itup?

Maybe, you could get a wireless from one house to another, but doing so would break the terms of the household's contract with the Cable Co that the service is for that house only.

Probably not, unless in combination you used the connection really heavily.

But it is a breach of contract and that is one of the things that we do not encourage, or allow discussion of on CF

have you checked if there are any WiMAX providers in the area? Worth a shot if cable and adsl are not options...

same here and inother parts of leics. Which is weird since we are a city that has a fair sized population.

This part of leics where I live has ntl analoguetv/phone only. So leaves BT. BTs coverage here is very bare, their is 2 exchanges on the far side of city not near side, so its already at least a km just when you hit the first residental areas, then their is a distance of about 8km after that to the only exchange in this side of leicester. The other sides of leicester all have much more BT exchanges covering an equal area. So shorter phone lines. Ntl in some other areas of leics has broadband and even digital tv but ironically these areas are also better coverage by BT. The areas I am talking about are highly populated so I am very surpised BT doesnt react, ntl are apperently enabling broadband but its not happened.

Theres another option I believe $ky do a service through the dish.

I also read a few years ago you could get a dedigated dish for BB but this was download only (12Meg/s) and a phone was needed for uploads

he would likely call the 512kbit acceptable, most people probably could get a dodgy 512kbit or 256kbit on adsl max now in that area. By dodgy I mean it has a thin snr margin so probably lose connection every hour or so but just about functions

Sky do not provide a service, it is possible to get a 2-way service through a dish but it is expensive, the more common way is how you mentioned with the Dial-Up Upload.

and you can get the free to air DVB TV directly on you PC included, something NTL
refuse to do even now

Wimax might be a very good thing to help NTL improve their services (competition is a very good thing), wonder if south manchester will ever get WiMax

regarding setting up a personal wireless network over 2 miles, its a challenge, but doable if for instance you wanted your girfriend to be able to remote control your desktop

as though she were sat infront of your machine using your valid ntl connection.

look at large external yagi (tv style)arials, or better for long distance parabolic (sat type dish)arials,and they must be line of sight.

the hardest part is sourceing the mini wifi pigtails/connectors and best quality lowloss cable locally, and rememer to keep your wifi arial cable as short as you possibly can as longer =loss of power and hence speed,you should easly manage 10mbit, perhaps far better (11g 22mbit/11g+ even more)with the right set of directional arials.

any 2 matching madwifi 11g pci/pcmcia/cardbus cards should do the trick for your personal or even beginings of your community wireless network, but as already said, only use the official connected machine to do your broadband

you might even look to useing the new 11n (300mbit) cards and they are using MiMO and hence suposed to be far better at distance and clearing up the connection so faster overall.

11g/22mbit is good enough to play your average DVD over the wireless network for instance.
