Question Handset problems & energy efficiency lighting

Having experienced problems with our cablebox handset - red light remaining on and incorrect pages appearing on the screen (still able to change channels manually on the box itself without problem) - we called customer services. Strangely, we were asked if we had recently installed energy efficient lighting. Does anyone know why would this affect the function of the handset?

Yes in some odd situations energy efficient lighting can create signals that interfere. It would be quite unusual though. Presumably you have changed the batteries on the remote?

Re: Handset problems & energy efficiency lighting

Also backlighting in some Flat TVs can generate the "wrong" sorts of light that can effect it too

Hmm, interesting. You learn something new everyday! No, new batteries did not make a difference. New handset is on its way from NTL and we have to send old one back for 'analysis'. Thanks for your posts.

Lightbulb Re: Handset problems & energy efficiency lighting

it seems that the new ntl remotes get confused for a better word when using energy saving type lightbulbs i find at the start up of the bulb the remote wont operate the STB at all until at least 5 minutes roughly later then all is fine well weird this one oh well cant have everything ?

Re: Handset problems & energy efficiency lighting

That is because when you first turn an energy saving lightbulb on, it generates a lot of light near and/or in the Infra-Red frequency until it warms up (this is why these bulbs appear dull when you first turn them on) when it gets into the visible light ranges which is why after a few minutes of being on, it shouldn't (but still could - maybe not as much) confuse the IR sensor on the STB.
