Remote File Transfer Access.

I have my Motorola Surfboard modem feeding my Internet connection into a Linksys WRT54G broadband wifi router and 4 port switch.

I set it up about 2 years ago using what little networking experience i picked up to get it going. I have a Dell desktop wired into it, and i transmits secured wireless internet access to 3 laptops (and a DS for Mario Kart!).

Like a lot of other people, I would like to be able to connect to my home pc's remotely using the internet. Im looking to be able to transfer files from a machine inside the network to one on the net, and vice versa.
This doesnt seem possible with the DHCP system Blueyonder have in place, as my routers IP address changes all the time.

Is there a way (via the routers config screens) to allow remote access of this type?

Have a look at http://www.dyndns.org. They will give you a domain name, which you can then use to access your PC. It does need support from the router, or if a PC is connected straight to the Cablemodem, you need to run special software on it. However, most routers, in my experience, do have an option to support dyndns.

Im glad to hear it might be possible, as i had started to doubt that it was.
I have recently been given a Dell Poweredge 2600 server, and would like to be able to access its array of hard disks from outside my network.

I have already registered a .co.uk domain name, so can this DNS service be applied to that or will i need a new one? The website isnt clear on this from what ive seen so far.

I'd save your .co.uk address for web space and use a no-ip.com address for file access.

I use realvnc and find it secure enough if you change the basic port and have a good password.

Don't forget to forward the port through your router and you can use a different port for each pc ie. myvnc.no-ip.com:5999 for 1 pc and myvnc.no-ip.com:6400 for another.

Good recommendation from handyman with vnc, you have more configurability with what port you you need your vnc server running on. If your only going to use MS RDP, then you need to port forward port 3389. If you have all MS OS's such as XP Pro or 2k3 server, you can RDP from one to the other just using it's computer name and don't see any slow down really.

Go to dyndns.org as Stuart C says and signup with them. Create a static account and enter the username and pass in to the https://192.168.1.1/DDNS.asp page (your IP address maybe different). If you want to use your .co.uk domain name, you can create a CNAME record and point it at the domain name you have created with dyndns.

Might be a bit pointless, but fun all the same!!

What we have done is setup access into out server via RDC then from the server we have VNC from there, only one port needs to be setup to forward then, bit easier than having to remember all the port numbers.
