ntl is heaven of the cable world - what is heaven of the adsl world

PLEASE STICK TO THE TOPIC OF THIS THREAD.

I am moving out of home next week and the new pad unfortunately doesnt have cable in the area (cardiff bay!)

Please can someone recommend me an adsl provided that provides true unlimited downloads ( NO FAIR USAGE POLICY) and true full speed 24 hours a day ( NO SLOW SPEEDS IN EVENING OR WEEKEND.

i'm looking for 2mb or above for under £25 i would pay a few more pounds if it meant the difference between true and false unlimited usage or true or false full speed 24/7.

( the following is optional reading if u want to understand why im asking above question)....

i am fed up of hearing adsl providers advertising unlimited service when it isnt unlimited its subject to a fair usage policy and even when u try and keep download out of those times u still get in trouble. i want an adsl provider that gives me the speed i pay for . i get this with ntl so why cant an adsl provider do the same for me

some of you may be reading this post because you have found your experience of ntl far from heaven and you are curious to know what good could possibly be said for ntl.

--------------

why i love ntl...

well for a start there's the real unlimited download package they offer. no restrictions on amount downloaded on any of their packages. even when they had the cap i regularly downloaded above the cap and never had any problems.

secondly there's the fact u really get the speed u pay for - at least in my area i've found that to be true. i have always got what i would consider the maximum speed i.e if im on 1mb i got 120 KB a second. for 2mb i got 240KB and now its 4mb im get 480. i get these speeds 24 hours a day without fail.
ive read that the reason ntl is more reliable than adsl providers is because the contention ratio is like a business connection for adsl 20:1 rather than ure typical 50:1.

---------------

why i am very suspicious of adsl....

i tried tiscali last year and had an awful time with them.

i wasnt getting full connection speeds 24/7... in the evenings i dropped below 50% of full connection speed and on weekends in the daytime and evening it was even worse.

i have worked for bt broadband and i have heard the problems many users experience with speed and disconnections using the bt service.

i have considered bulldog but i am hearing mixed reviews of them.

I say PlusNet all the way. I pay £21.99 for their premium package a 2mb+ (upto 8mb and most of the times its above 7mb) uncapped connection.

i bet you will find in the small print of must companies who offer unlimited broadband there there is a usuage policy, some of them get complaints about it all the time. Typical example, tiscali

LLU will be better since they don't pay as much to BT. Also visit www.samknows.com for solutions in your new area

As far as Plusnet goes for fair usage policies...lets just say it doesn't get any worse then them

True.. They may be offering an uncapped service for present users, but they certainly don't for new users

Plusnet offer a strange limitation system (i use plusnet)

Your allowed to download X (depending on which package you go for) during peak time, which they class as between 4pm and midnight, and then between midnight and 4pm you have unlimited downloads... if you get to 75% of your peak allowance though, they WILL restrict your connection....

Goto http://www.plus.net/residential/broa...bb_premierlink and then click on the prdocut usage tab in the middle of the screen

Doesn't exist. Theres a FUP with every provider and none can or will guarantee you full speed 24x7. It's a shared contended service.

Absolutely no chance. Your budget is too low and your expectations far too high.

You come off awfully aggressive in this post.. You will not find any provider, ADSL or otherwise, that can guarantee you full performance all the time, partly because you don't pay for full performance all the time. If you want to guarantee yourself full 2Mbit performance all the time you need to be handing over £500 / month or more. Welcome to the wonder world of contended services and sorry if that's not what you want to hear but that's the way it is.

Not anymore it's not, the traffic shaping hardware needs some exercising.

Not true most ADSL is actually provisioned at far less than 50:1. Plusnet are a notable exception provisioning as they do at worse than 70:1.

You got full speed, you were lucky, lots don't and this will get worse thanks to the transition to the former Telewest system to decide when upgrades happen and to the increase in available speeds.

Yes this is what happens when you go after a cheap 'unlimited' service. You get what you pay for, and Tiscali aren't the greatest, they are cheap tat.

I can guarantee you if you'd worked for ntl you'd have heard about the problems many users there experience too

http://www.samknows.com and an LLU provider are your best bet. If you can't get LLU services you'll struggle.

Ignore the people recommending Plusnet, it's not unlimited, has an extensive fair use policy and makes extensive use of traffic shaping. As I doubt that you want an unlimited service to surf the web and send email I very much doubt that Plusnet is for you as they restrict the P2P / Newsgroups / FTP that probably make up the majority of your usage.

My only recommendation if you can't get LLU services is Bulldog's own 2Mbit 'offnet' service. It's £24.50/month and has no caps on it at all. I can think of a fairly prominent member of this forum who keeps his service fairly busy.

Again though it has a FUP as every service does, and performance cannot be guaranteed. You are contended both at the exchange and at the ISP again so there's potential for visible contention at both locations.

EDIT: Removed the 'up yours' smileys from quotes, not really necessary.

Nice to see someone recommend my recommendation least I know I am talking sense.

There are two main problems with ADSL. 1) the charge monthly to BT - someone tell me if I am wrong but isn't this like £13.00 2) Bandwidth its not free the more you use the more it costs the ISP they might say unlimited but if your connection is considered unrealisable for every day usuage then they will cap you.

Whereas LLU offers cheaper solution to the ISP which i believe after investments works out to be 5.00 per customer, again someone tell me if i am wrong.

Also bulldog, they have just announced they are pulling residential broadband to work back on wholesale
