pc gone haywire!!
Hi
I have had a lot of help in this forum with sorting out my networking.
Now have a huge problem ( i think)
I uninstalled NIS2005 as the subscription ran out and could not renew it due to the subscription date being 12/1899 etc. I installed ZA firewall and AVG antivirus. ( both free).
Now my pc taked a long time to boot up, and i sometimes get a black screen with the mouse pointer frozen. After a few times of powering off and on, it does load.
However, when i click on the "my computer" icon, the pane comes up blank with a searchlight, trying to find the drives? If I click on the my documents folder, the pointer just locks. I dont know if this is related.
The outlook program takes a long time to load.
I dont know much about pc's, but reading through posts in the forum I have not come across any with similar problems and how to solve them.I tried task manager to end programs when locked and notice the CPU at 100%( showing on the bottom of task manager window!
I hope that the above makes sense.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Ironically, I bougt a 250gb external HD and havent had a chance to connect it and take a backup.
Cheers

Re: pc gone haywire!!
I'd suggest going to the Norton (symantec) website and searching for the 'norton removal tool' In my experience when uninstalling Norton it leaves loads of stuff behind and you need to run the tool to totally remove all entries for the program. I think it's called 'Symnrt'
Actually here is the link http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...&osv=&osv_lvl=
Then i'd run a chkdsk and see if the Hard drive is ok.... Open a command prompt (start>run> type in cmd then hit enter. Then, at the C:\> prompt, type chkdsk /F and hit return.. The PC may want to reboot to run the check, this is normal...
this should give you something to get on with.....

can you get into safe mode? I would try a system restore to before you did anything. The unistall nis and run the tool in Tightscots post test the machine .Then install Avast instead of AVG (personal pref but also free) Test the machine ensure it boots ok.Then install zonealarm and test

Re: pc gone haywire!!
ok when your pc boots press the the F8 key a few times and wait(im saying safe mode to stop cpu maxing in normal windows)
You will get a list of options select start computer in safe mode
once booted got start / programs/ accessories/system tools /system restore
Run the program.Hit Restore my computer to a previous time and select a time and date before you uninstalled Nis good luck

Re: pc gone haywire!!
I think it has something to do with ZoneAlarm or AVG, since i had this problem, with a black screen with the mouse showing up for about 15 seconds before the welcome screen.
I still have this issue since i have ZoneAlarm With AntiVirus installed.

Re: pc gone haywire!!
@Zinglebarb
Ok.. booted pc in safe mode.. restored to previous time. pc tried to boot .. got black screen with pointer frozen in middle.
Had to power off and powered on again. Windows loaded..
clicked on my computer icon.. still blank with searchlight..
Perhaps my safest bet is to buy the Norton System works 2006 premier version which includes ghost 10. that way.. i know i am giving in to symantec.. but hopefully the pc will be back to normal. .( I am not worried about the cost... if it will get my pc back to normal)
What do you suggest?
thanks for your help.
Cheers

Re: pc gone haywire!!
@zinglebarb
Clicked on My documents icon.. as soon as i clicked the down arrow.. to change the folder.. comp froze.
Ctl+alt+del.. Task manager
the CPU usage showed 100%.. and its being taken by a process called dumprep.exe
Hope this sheds some light
thanks

Re: pc gone haywire!!
Try this
Method 1: Use the System Configuration Utility to disable the Dumprep.exe tool
1.Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.2.Click the Startup tab.3.Click to clear the dumprep 0 -k or dumprep 0 -u check box, and then click OK.4.Restart the computer.
Method 2: Use Registry Editor to remove the Dumprep.exe entry
loadTOCNode(2, 'workaround');1.Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.2.Locate and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
3.In the right pane, click Dumprep, and then press DELETE.4.Restart the computer.
taken from windows help files
Back up registry first. goto start/ run /regedit click file and export name and save reg file

Re: pc gone haywire!!
I googled dumprep.exe.
found an easier fix i think
control>system>advanced tab> error reporting>disable
However, still no drives being shown in "my computer"
and now CPU shows 50% usage by svchost.exe in processes When comp freezes.
Driving me crazy.. lol
cheers
---------- Post added at 01:46 ---------- Previous post was at 01:36 ----------
also did what you suggested.. Method 1
there is no dumprep in the startup tab
however there is a startup item which does not have any details and window is too small to get the whole path
there are not many items in the startup tab
Havent tried method 2 yet
Thanks
