Lowering speed in the North East (10Meg)
I've had 10Meg since it came out..
I used to get 9.*Mbps
Now i'm getting slower by the day
I ran three tests from this site, each one getting slower (by the minute )
Worth a call to NTL, or not bother?
Edit:
Fri, 21 Apr 2006 15:32:24 GMT
1st 512K took 2093 ms = 244.6 KB/sec, approx 2016 Kbps, 1.97 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1172 ms = 436.9 KB/sec, approx 3600 Kbps, 3.52 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1157 ms = 442.5 KB/sec, approx 3646 Kbps, 3.56 Mbps
4th 512K took 1328 ms = 385.5 KB/sec, approx 3177 Kbps, 3.1 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 3110 Kbps, 3.04 Mbps
I also use netpersec, and i can see that my speed is all over when doing one particular download (say nvidia drivers for example, i used to get 1.2Mbps constantly) It quite rapidly jumps up and down, not constant at all

probably, yes... looks like you get the full speed at times, so likely to be a congestion issue.

Re: Lowering speed in the North East (10Meg)
if it slows down after 3pm and bottoms out during the evening between 7pm and 11pm and then speeds up after midnight it is very likely congestion.

Re: Lowering speed in the North East (10Meg)
Just to update
The speed today is even worse adslguide gives 1.6Mbps downstream, but 0.5Mbps upstream (so thats spot on)
I phoned ntl (tried the 0800) and the chap took about 2 minutes to discover that i have 10Mbps, considering i had already told him that from the off, and then he said i need to speak with tech support. Ok, though they might say that. So he transfers me. But I get asked to enter a pin by the machine and then which platform (bromley or langley). So I had to hang up and dial tech support myself
Got through to steve. Steve was friendly enough and started waffling about what might affect my download speed. I told Steve that i had a degree in business and computing so i knew what i was talking about. He quickly agreed to take the modem off the system and they'll put it back their end (change the ubr setting in other words?? or the likes?) But he couldn't do it then and to ring back after 8pm, preferably 10pm when they can do it.
So i'm ringing back later today about 10pm.
I hope they can sort it, coz £34.99 for 1.6Mbps isn't good

Re: Lowering speed in the North East (10Meg)
Just phoned them back (they're open until midnight)
Massive improvement. only took 2 secs really.
All i was asked to do was restart my computer, i didn't even touch the modem apart from to read the mac code out.
Thanks to Steve and Rahul at the tech support - good work guys!! Fast and efficent.
Now i get:
Tue, 25 Apr 2006 20:57:01 GMT
1st 512K took 453 ms = 1130.2 KB/sec, approx 9313 Kbps, 9.09 Mbps
2nd 512K took 438 ms = 1169 KB/sec, approx 9633 Kbps, 9.41 Mbps
3rd 512K took 422 ms = 1213.3 KB/sec, approx 9998 Kbps, 9.76 Mbps
4th 512K took 453 ms = 1130.2 KB/sec, approx 9313 Kbps, 9.09 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 9564 Kbps, 9.34 Mbps
It must have been congestion somewhere on the network

Well, that was errr, a waste of time !
After getting through to india, explaining the problem, she got me to go to http://homepage.ntlworld.com/testmyspeed & download the 50mb file. When I told her I was getting a download speed of 67.5K/s, she told me this was fine for 10mbps. WHen I said err, no, this would be ok if I was on 1mbps, she wouldnt have it. I had to point out to her that it would be fine if that was my upload speed to which she went away, presumably looked it up & came back saying yes, you were right sir !
In the end she said their systems were down so she couldnt really test anything on my connection & to phone back tomorrow
