10meg & NTL Modem

Hello

Was wondering if having a ntl 100 modem would affect my 10meg connection..

Upgraded about 3 days ago and ever since then when i use the connection alot, about 5 programs using it the whole pc disconnects from the net reconnects, and then disconnects, untill nothing is using it...

i am not bothered about the speeds i get on 10meg but getting disconnected is a worry :S

could this be because i have a ntl 100 modem? and its old and stuff? this never happened on a 2meg line

Might be because the modem can't handle the throughput, i hear the NTL:250's can do it withease.

hmm you connected through a router or direct ethernet cable to the modem?

also go into a dos prompt and ping the modem. to get into dos you go to START -> RUN -> type in CMD

now type in the following PING 192.168.100.1 -t -w 10 and let this run for something like 3 hours at the minimum so you can see how many packages get sent and how many received.

as I had something simmilar with my 120 that died when I upgraded to the 10meg, mine just rebooted itself all the time and when I pinged it I had for something like a minute or 2 time outs and then answers, and this continued for a couple of days until I had a nice guy in NTL Swansea that saw this problem and booked an engineer to replace it with a shiny 250

Just as a word a 200 modem I had which was quite capable of doing over 18Mbit/s download (not that I'd know of course ) responded intermittently to pings as well, but the modem was fine.

I don't think that proves a fault condition, sorry

Most CM's are only limited by DOCSIS ..... I believe the upper limit can be as low as 36M so 10M realy should not be a problem for the modem itself.

In your setup, I'd be looking at the router.

Try turning off your modem, connecting it straight to the PC then powering it back up. When it's 'ready' power up the PC and try running your progs.

ntl 100 modems cannot do 10Mbit.

ntl 200 and 250 modems can do 10Mbit without a problem, as can Motorola 4100s.

thanks for your advice but i am sure it is not the router, it happened today again i got bored of waiting so i went down to reset me router and modem i noticed that the rdy light on the modem was off so i think it is the modem!




i am about to ring them up to get a new modem :P ^^^

Incorrect. The physical cable media rate is defined by DOCSIS, but the bridge layer in the CM doesn't necessarily have to forward at full (max) 36Mbit/s rate to be DOCSIS compliant. The compliance only deals with what is and isn't forwarded, how the CM deals with customer equipment, and the signalling used between the CM and CMTS (aka UBR). There's also recommendations on things like LEDs but most vendors appear to ignore these!

I got my Terayon swapped because the old Terayon couldn't handle the 10 meg speed, they gave me a 250 modem which is ok.

Yep. To comply with SCTE / Cablelabs, and indeed to actually work, all modems must on the DOCSIS / EurodDOCSIS downstream be able to tune and decode all 30.3Mbps / 42.88Mbps / 41.72Mbps / 55.62Mbps of DOCSIS or EuroDOCSIS related info on the wire (am including MPEG framing, FEC and R-S encoding there, the whole shebang), however the CPU and buffer memory in the modem doesn't need to be capable of forwarding all of this.

Only how the bridging must work is defined, not how much data it is capable of shifting.

Same as with the Pace STBs, they had no issue with the cable modem itself the issue was CPU limitation in the box as it shared the same CPU between the TV tuner and cable modem tuner.
