Torrents aren't necessarily illegal, fair enough. Torrentleech not hosting illegal content...? Bwahahaha, yeah, course they don't. That's why they have closed their registration, and have a ratio imposed on users - because they all want to share stuff from the public domain, and Linux distros, right?

Yep, you're not going to find ubuntu on a private torrent site.

If you read a few nfos here and there, sceners hate torrent sites. The irony of private torrent sites is that they act just like a Top Site scene FTP - they impose ratios, are closed off and only an invite from someone in the know can get you on. They're not as different as they may like to think.

Apart from that sceners give and take between one another via affils etc, Torrent sites don't give anything back to the people who crack and rip the stuff, they just spread their work, usually without asking.

And sceners spread the work of others without asking, too.
Daftest thing is, though, the scene moans about P2P but then releases that make it to P2P and the newsgroups come from couriers within the scene who have access to the Top Sites/Dump Sites and then upload onto P2P/Newsgroups to further their affilled group's work. Keeping the work in their own private community of 20 or so Top Sites around the globe might be some groups ideal, but most realise that this would soon stale the scene. People who have access to 0day releases drift away overtime and the scene will be hungry for more, but hiding away from P2P will ensure that no one new sees them. The scene would die a slow death. P2P and newsgroups keep the scene alive, they just don't want to admit to it.

Getting back to the original post. If you want an invite, go onto IRC and make a few friends in torrent channels. But to be of any use to a private tracker you need to be a good uploader with access to new releases (see above), good speed and the ability to maintain a good ratio. NTL's upload speed won't cut it in the long run.

Disclaimer: No, I don't know any addresses to FTP sites. I don't use torrents. A game/movie/util worth playing/watching/using is worth buying! etc. etc. Be good to animals and help old ladies cross the street.
