Modem problems
Hi guys,
I've been having a few problems with my modem (a motorola surfboard model). Every now and then it seems to just lock up. It won't send/receive any data, and won't go into standby when I press the button on top. It needs a proper reset (unplugging for a few minutes) and that usually does the trick. This seems to be occurring more frequently, as well as just dropping the connection for no apparent reason. So a few questions:
Is there a way to test the modem?
Who owns the modem? Is it mine or leased form telewest like the TV box?
Can I just buy any other cable modem and plug it in?
How can I tell if there are problems at Telewest's end?
Thanks for reading, any help appreciated.

Re: Modem problems
If the modem keeps locking up or loosing it's connection contact telewest faults. See what they have to say. It shouldn't keep doing that.
the modem is Telewest's not yours. If it needs replacement it should be TW who do this as it is effectivetly hired. It might not be the modem at fault though.
Whatever you do don't buy another off Ebay or wherever. It won't work.

Re: Modem problems
Hi,
Why will an identical modem (motorola SB5100i) to the one I am currently using not work. Do you have to download new information into it.
I was thinking of purchasing one so as I could use my xbox 360 downstairs. Maybe I will have to think again????

The Modems are registered to your TW account, and so third party ones, or ones bought off ebay will NOT work.
To run an Xbox off it you would want a router anyway. (Of course, thats only if you want your PC and Xbox online at the same time)

Re: Modem problems
Thanks for the reply.
Do you know the reason why modems bought on ebay do not work. Is it the modem itself or is it software related. Can it be made to work by changing software settings.
Cheers

We would not even give this information out on this site. The short and long of it is, do NOT buy them off eBay, you get them free when you sign upto a service anyway.

The secret is, there is no secret. It just can't be done unless you pyshically have the box they give you.
