Cable speed issues.

Hey, i'm a new member here, but i've been reading this place for the past week or so. Seems like a nice place to be, so i signed up, anywho, thats the intro over. Now, to business.

I'ma new customer with Telewest signed under their 3 for £30 offer, which i then upgraded to include the 4mb cable option and additional phone serviecs (to a total value of £45)

My problem is speed with the cable connection i'm getting here, its unacceptable, when loading a page most of the time its like i'm back on 512kb, and sometimes seems like i'm on 128kb. When in reality i should be on roughly 3.7mbs (taking into account losses).

I'm using a Motorola Surfboard modem (Model SB5101E) which is now connected to a Linksys Wireless router. The setup works fine.

I know speedtests don't mean much these days due to the servers speeds and the like
, but still, when i do these tests i seem to get a throughput of 600kbps to 700kbps, which is totally wrong, it should read around 3800, correct?

I did a traceroute to bbc.co.uk, and here are the results, note that these are almost exactly the same results as when i'm not using my wireless router and am connecting directly through the motorola modem itself.

Results:

I'm just wondering what i should do about this problem, and whether or not it would be resolved... I dunno, i'm just looking for help and guidance, can my modem even support 4Mb ?

My wireless router,by the way, can support 54mbps.

Re: Cable speed issues.

those are extremely high ping times m8

200ms is back to 56k telephone modem speeds - so 2000+ there is defo something wrong.

ur modem is good m8 - one of the newer surf boards - and its black should have no problems with 4mb.

do all the recommended clean outs - and follow some of the previous thread info on configuration page of ur modem.

2000 ms is scarey tho - get on to tech support directly too.

best of luck.

ps - just a hunch - but next time u take a ping test/traceroute etc. note the times.

ive been researching BY's high pings of late - and there seems to be more than a few "pockets" of rubbish service at peak times 6-11pm appearing over the country - with no better response from telewest than giving the few that dont take their waffle of cleaning out spyware etc -giving them reduced cable fees.

Re: Cable speed issues.

Funny you should mention times between 6 and 11pm, the early traceroute i did was around 7pm. Obviously peak times.

As for spyware/malware/adware i assure you i'm clean, hehe. Brand new install of Win XP Pro SP2 Corporate Edition. No dodgy sites allowed

Heres a traceroute from just now...

Yet still, my internet seems exceedingly slow, the traceroute to me shows no real hold ups, and i'm really pleased with it.

Time to go thread hunting for similar problems. Thanks mate.

Re: Cable speed issues.

Update. Ok, turns out the modem is configured correctly, and so is the Router. So, everything is ok in theory. The high latency is because of peak times. I'm monitoring it though, it should never have gotten that high. Hopefully yesterday was just really bad.

I've found there is still work going on in my area, albeit usually in the wee hours of the morning, and that my account with Blueyonder Broadband is actually at just 1Mb until March 31st. After that i get my 4Mb, which i feel is stupid as i paid for 4Mb to begin with... But, the plus side is i'm getting it a little cheaper than the next package up (which i though i would be on)

Just got to wait a week, April 1st, i'm testing my baby out again.

Currently, after all their diagnostics i can download at 111kbps average, which is 1Mb speed, so, it all adds up.

Very helpful technical support. 4 1/2 stars
(Spoke to some bloke called Charles if you're interested)

Re: Cable speed issues.

hi i am new too and have been on the phone again today about the very slow download speeds .
I have just begun to uderstand what service i should be getting for the 4 meg service , the technical advisor told me 500kb/sec , in rality i have never had any mkore than 50k/bsec and more often it 10k/bsec .
After going through the whole process with the technical support people they tell me it is becuse they have too many people using the service approx 95% capacity so thats all they can provide.
So i amleft thinking why are we paying for a service thats not being delivered to day they tell it a known service issue so i can speak to an advisor. On the issue of refunds I have to write to their head quarters.

Re: Cable speed issues.

aye goodluck folks - admin should really sticky FAQ current BY issues.. hint hint .. how to get reduced cable modem prices. and a non BS reason for all the problem - which we all know is oversubscription and rubbish UBRs in our areas.

ie how to change id channel . how to traceroute etc for all the folks at the end of despair searching turn up here looking for answers.

off to play a game of bf2 before the evil ping monster arrives .
laters

aye technical support can be helpful with "download" speed explanation - ie open a few applications from a ftp at same time to max out connection. what they are also doing is telling folks to max out connections in poor service areas = latency upspeeds are getting worse at peak times - doh doh doh.

Amazingly, even after their explanation of d/l speeds i can saturate my own line at 100 - 120kbps, so, i think my area may well be able to cope with the speeds they are promising.

So far i've had 2 issues with my account, 1 is the broadband. This one's sorting itself.
The other was mobile call barring that didn't take effect until the day after it was meant to work, thus resulting in me ending up with an extra quid on my bill. Nothing to worry about though

I could write a few howto's if you'd like ? Not sure how good a quality they'd be, but hey (Let me eat my pizza first though... hehe)

Oh, and a revolutionary way to kill hte ping monster... Run around with wire cutters to other "neighbours" houses...
