Wham! Bang! Wallop! - Meteor Crater

They reckon they've found a new meteor crater on Earth in the western desert area of Egypt.

About 25x the size of the famous crater in Arizona. They believe it was overlooked before because of it's size. They had to look from space to see it.

Re: Wham! Bang! Wallop! - Meteor Crater

if it wasn't for the white dotted line i couldn't see a 'crater'

maybe its cos its been filled in with sand. someone should dig all the sand out and fill it with water. - make a nice pool that.

That's because you're looking at it on a gigantic scale!
The only reason you would be able to tell you were on a mountain was by being able to see down. If the mountain was a couple of miles across at the top would you be able to tell it was a mountain or would you think you were in a field?

Another huge crater was found in SA: http://www.southafrica.info/ess_info...ort-080605.htm

And this is the big one in America: http://www.barringercrater.com/science/main.htm

The point is, when it impacts, the cratering deforms the ground in a fairly typical pattern. This is what they've found.

Basically, it makes a hole

Slightly more involved than that, and also you have to take into account weathering and other geological action that can subsequently change the landscape.

So while the 'hole' might be less evident, matter ejected from the crater might still show or some features of the original crater.

e.g.

There are people that study holes. Words fail me. Never mentioned that job in careers at school.

Re: Wham! Bang! Wallop! - Meteor Crater

the 'complex crater' could make 2 pools. or maybe one pool with a shallow bit in the middle, like a sand bank.
