Internet access by modem

Hello,
I am horribly confused here. Is Telewest a part of NTL?
Anyhow, I digress. A friend of mine living on Shirley, West Mids has his phone and tv through Telewest cable. He has a computer and used to have internet acces via BlueYonder. The costs kept going up faster than he was prepared to accept and the service was more than he needed, so he now no longer has an internet connection. I am trying to set something up for him. All he needs is a simple free or very cheap service like so many companies offer, but they all say you have to have your line through BT. He does not want broadband. Is there a service along the lines that Freeserve used to do available to him?
Is there an easy way to contact Telewest directly without having to listen to hours of automated telephone messages and instructions?

Telewest has merged with ntl, but for the time beiing are still publicly trading as two separate entities.

If your friend already has phone and TV getting the lowest speed TW broadband may in fact be more economic, and certainly faster, than dial up, especially if he uses it for more than a few minutes a day.
