email problem
Hi all, I have an email problem, I thought it might be OE but now don't know, I have tried thunderbird and operamail ( within opera ) nothing, I've deleted all accounts within the OE and re-installed, still nothing. I can access mail via the NTL webmail so the account must be ok
Any of you night owls fancy a guess ???
TIA

Re: email problem
Well as it works via webmail, my guess is on your anti virus blocking it as the passwords must be correct to get it via webmail.

Curiousity more than anything but can you telnet ?????
To telnet the mail server:
Click onto Start then Run
type telnet pop.ntlworld.com 110 - press enter
+OK InterMail POP3 server ready.
type user then a space then your user.name - press enter
+OK please send PASS command
type pass then a space then your password - press enter
+OK user.name is welcome here
This logs you into the pop server.
type list.
This will list all the mails on ther server.
Then type quit to close the telnet connection.

Falls down at this point, just hangs on the prompt, nothing else.

Note sure that works properly anyway My ntl email is fine, yet telnet response gets:
C:\>telnet pop.ntlworld.com
Connecting To pop.ntlworld.com...Could not open connection to the host, on port
23: Connect failed

Unfortunately, 'disabling' Norton often doesn't actually stop it running. You could try going into Task Manager and ending the processes it's running. Don't forget to reboot afterwards to start everything up again!
Can you ping pop.ntlworld.com? Simpler than telnetting, and if you can't ping it, something is definitely blocking your access.

Re: email problem
I would try removing nortons, stripping out anything it has installed and then try the email. It only takes one rule corruption to really mess things up.

The command has to be "telnet pop.ntlworld.com 110" to specify the correct port for POP (110), otherwise it defaults to the telnet port (23).

You're welcome, Nortons is great for a lot of people but occassionally it can play up like this. Unfortunately most firewalls can go wrong, when they do though it's a right pain to diagnose what is causing the issues seen by the operator
Glad it's working now
