Re: file sharing
Few things to check before I go off for some booze myself!
- Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > right click and select Properties, check that file and printer sharing is listed and ticked
- Check both PCs are in the same IP range (normally 192.168.x.y - importantly, x has to be the same)
- Check both PCs are in the same domain/workgroup (Control Panel > System > Computer Name)
- Check both PCs don't have the same name and that the name conforms to the naming standards.
You've already checked the firewall but double check that the Windows Firewall's off too.

Re: file sharing
I think you are saying that you can access shared folders on both PC and laptop, so nothing wrong with networking.
If you are running XP on one or both, you need to be set up on both machines as a user with the same login name and password, windows will then be able to authenticate you on the remote PC and you will be given the same access that you would have if you logged on locally.
