Hello

What do you mean by 'nothing happens'?

Sorry - when I say "nothing happens" - it says Waiting for re[ply" for ages then goes to a blank screen and says "Done".
It always used to got to Modem Status straight away. I've tried putting in just the http://192.168.100.1/ without the root:root and that doesn't work either

well check to see if the network card its connected to is up and running in device manager and it has a active connection. Does the enet light light up on the modem to show it is communicating with the pc?

Re: http://root:root@192.168.100.1 - Not working
Thanks Festoid - but that presents another problem. If I look at the security settings in XP, the main screen says XP Firewall is On. But if I go into the "Manage Security Setings" it says it is off. I keep turning it to On and back to Off, but the main screen still says it is On. (I am running ZoneAlarm though and turning that Off doesn't solve it))

Re: http://root:root@192.168.100.1 - Not working
new recruit here - I also cannot get anything from this link - "cannot find server" - is there any other way to check the modem status?
The problem that I have with my 2M connection is that while I can get e reasonable download speed, the speed can suddenly drop to nothing and stay there for a while, recover a bit ... and so on. I can see this happening "live" using the AnalogueX Netstat utility.
I have seen various comments on line saturation etc, and wonder if this is a likely reason.
cheers

Re: http://root:root@192.168.100.1 - Not working
Try going to
http://192.168.1.100
then enter root as username and password when the dialogue comes up...
There was a patch to IE to prevent USER:PASS@ADDRESS links

Re: http://root:root@192.168.100.1 - Not working
Aha - just realised I had been playing round with proxies (for no particular reason!!) I have now changed to a direct connection and it is now working. Thank you.
As an aside. Should I be setting a proxy or am I OK as I am?

Re: http://root:root@192.168.100.1 - Not working
If you're not having proxy-related problems, don't specify a proxy, Markly Darkly. If you have have a problem that you need to specify a proxy to fix, then do so, but remember that certain operations, like accessing your modem settings, can't be done if you've specified a proxy. Also, check every now and then and see if the problem's been fixed: ntl probably use proxy assignments to load balance their system; if a lot of customers specify proxies, they can't do this.
Edit: if you use Firefox, get the SwitchProxy extension. This enables you to set up several proxies and switch them on the fly.
