NTL Remote Access

Hi Everyone,

I want to find some way of using my pc remotely, say from my office at work. I have a small network at home wth a netger wgt634u router which has the functionality of dynamic dns built in. The problem is that the public ip address that the router gets is not allowing me access to my router from outside my home network. If i go to a web site that tells me my ip address i get something like this 62.255.32.16 but this is totally different to the address my router is telling me it has. Can i not use dynamic dns with ntl and if not what other ways are there arround this problem? I am using XP pro pc's both at work and at home.

Any help would be much appreciated as this problem is driving me mad!

I reckon 62.255.32.16 maybe the proxy address - go to www.ip2location.com to find out your true IP address.

I'd try either RealVNC (www.realvnc.com) or LogMeIn (www.logmein.com). With the router, though, you might have to setup port forwarding - especially with RealVNC.

thanks for your quick reply

you were right the 62.255.32.16 address is indeed the proxy. I have turned remote management on on my router but am not able to get to it using my true public ip address. I'm not sure what to do now? Once i have established a connection with the router then i can set up port forwarding etc. I'll get there eventualy!

At the moment i cant even contact my router at home over the internet via its public ip address from work. I need to sort this probem out before i think about software do i not?

Clutching at straws here (in other words I really am not sure whether I am helping or misleading).

Does your router offer a VPN type passthrough facility? Is that enabled? Your router may simply be bouncing bakc or denying any signals you are sending remotely as it's not allowed to forward them into your home LAN.

Be sure you are connecting, as indicated earlier to this thread, to the true IP WAN address of your router. If in doubt as to what this is, use the "connection" link of CF's headers to work this out (from your home PC), and don't reboot your modem afterwards, or that IP could change.

On my linksys router, i need to check what port the internal diag's are listening on. So say i want to link to my router remotly, i would type http://81.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080 for access.

Try adding :(port) after the IP.
