Changing from Set Top Box as modem to proper Cable Modem

Hi folks, I wonder if anyone can help with a query I have - I have also posted this in the blueyonder networking self help newsgroup.

I have the set top box as my cable modem . I got the Blueyonder self install
wireless pack and the wireless access point plugs into the set top box and
it works fine.

If I want to use a cable modem instead is it simply a case of obtaining one,
introducing a splitter into the cable from the wall to the set top box and
plugging the cable modem in? Or is there some association at the Blueyonder
end that provides my service out of the set top box only? I ask since I
understand that the set top box can only provide a maximum of 1Mbps service
and from what I have read the basic service that I use (512kbps) will
soonish be upgraded to 2Mbps and I don't want to lose out.

Thanks.

Jim

Re: Changing from Set Top Box as modem to proper Cable Modem

Hi Jim - you can only use a cable modem supplied by Telewest. If they argee to supply one, they will do any cabling that is required. you can't go splitting cables yourself; it would breach the T&Cs of your service. In any case, a non-Telewest modem won't work, as it won't be registered on their network.

I don't know what Telewest's policy is on swapping STB service for SACM, but there's no harm asking...

Why do you want to switch though?

Thanks for the response Chris ... at the moment the reason is to be able to take advantage of the upgrade to 2Mb when it appears (STB limited to 1Mb). But I am not sure that in practice I would notice much difference. Guess I just like fiddling with things!

NTL swapped STB users onto SACMs when it was necessary for them to get the higher speed - I'm sure Telewest will do the same for you. If they don't volunteer, ask them! It shouldn't cost you.
