i can get on the internet with the usb part modem fine
My problem when i try the ethernet lead my ip address changes to 169

could somebody help please as i want to go wireless with a router
If you are going to use a wireless router, you do not need to connect the ethernet port of the modem to your pc.
If you have the router already, connect modem -> router-> pc(s), and remember to *always* reboot the cable modem when changing devices that are connected to it.

Is the ethernet NIC in Network Connections set to automatically acquire IP address?
