Website Buying help - Expiration of Ownership and When Could i buy?
Hi All,
I have my eyes on a website that i want - which expires on 30th October 2005 - according to the whois.
The website is registered via UK2.net and the renewal date is the 30th - needless to say i do not currently own that domain.
However i do really want it though!
The whois states...
Quote:
Relevant Dates:
Registered on: 30-Oct-1999
Renewal Date: 30-Oct-2005
Last updated: 2-Mar-2004
Registration Status:
Registered until renewal date.

Am i right in thinking that come midnight on the 30th i should be able to buy this domain? Or is there any way i can "automatically" buy it.
Obviously i aint giving out the name of this domain.

In theory you would just register it yourself. In practice, if the domain is in active use and they simply forget to re-register, they would just sue you for cyber-squatting, which could be costly. Is it currently in use, or does it have a UK2.net holding page on it?

It currently has a uk2.net holding page, but why would it be cyber-squatting if A) its not a copyrighted name and B) it has expired?

Re: Website Buying help - Expiration of Ownership and When Could i buy?
you have to wait at least 90 days after the expiration date, and then hope it isn't snapped up by a broker
Then again, just because there's a holding page doesn't mean the domain isn't in use. There are thousands of domains without websites, and just used for mail forwarding. Judging by the dates you've given, I wouldn't get any hopes of this domain not being renewed

Re: Website Buying help - Expiration of Ownership and When Could i buy?
So during the 90 days after it has expired it is held for the current owner - after that i am able to buy it assuming he didnt reregister?
I assume this is .co.uk rules?

It goes to a status of Detagged for 90 days and then at a point on the 90th day becomes available, then first come first served.

Yep, I own several domains that don't have any website associated with them, they are purely for e-mail purposes.

Another point is that lots of managed registrations will inform the user on expiration rather than give notice, some of them even reregister for a customer if it's part of an agreement.

Re: Website Buying help - Expiration of Ownership and When Could i buy?
I got my email this morning to say my domain expired.
If I remember correctly once it goes past this date you have to pay over a £100 to get it back from nominet.

Be careful to monitor near the date (if it spends a long time detagged). One I was looking for was not available at 6am and snapped up by 9 am when I checked again.

Re: Website Buying help - Expiration of Ownership and When Could i buy?
I think the time varies depending on the registrar, there is a small time after expiration where the owner can renew and noone else can buy and then it becomes gernally available. 90 days seems much longer then I have experienced, normally I seen 4-6 weeks as grace period.

Re: Website Buying help - Expiration of Ownership and When Could i buy?
Got this from UK2.net which is a bit better - not much though.

Should the current owner not renew the domain, then it will take 60 days from
the expiry date for the domain to become available for purchase. You could
however give me the domian and I could pass you info on to the owner.

Yeah - right!
