Can I password protect some pages?

Hello all, this is my first post here.

I'm just starting to put together my first website. I would like to make a private area for my family to log into to see pics of my baby daughter, and find out how she is getting on and so on. Is there a way of making this kind of password protected area on my NTL webspace?

I have read an article at:
http://www.pagetutor.com/keeper/http...ntication.html
saying this is possible by making a .htaccess file, and a htpassword file. The tutorial shows how to do this using a telnet session; is it possible to telnet to my NTL webspace, or are the facilities there just too basic?

Any suggestions are welcome, thanks in advence,

Soundguy

Re: Can I password protect some pages?

No you can't do that with ntl space. You can apply a Java password but that's about as secure as an Iraqi border.

You could try i-web (who kindly host this site FOC)

They have a discounted cable forum package for 99p per month that gives you all you could ever want.

Re: Can I password protect some pages?

Hello again,

Thank you for your expertise, I have since gone and bought some web space and my name as a domain name too. It is a shame that the NTL webspace does not support these things, but I guess you only get so much for free. Anyway, the five page test web I set up in my NTL webspace was a good learning exercise and gave me a lot of confidence with my new site.

By the way, How would you use php to password protect a page?

regards,
Soundguy

Re: Can I password protect some pages?

I've used this on my NTL webspace in the past. Not exactly the most secure, but it would be okay for family pictures etc.

Unfortunately the free NTL webspace doesn't support any type of real password security or anything else for that matter!

Re: Can I password protect some pages?

He/she is not using NTL space anymore so can use a .htaccess file or anyother coded script, full server side functionality now.

OP - try this page as a starter for how to setup your .htaccess file
