Lately I've been unable to access VATSIM servers at 66.98.168.65 although they ping and tracert OK. A tech friend tells me -
" .. your ISP is using a cache proxy. that means all http requests are going through that server but the tracerts/pings are not. I believe that's the problem... an improperly setup or unflushed caching proxy (cache-2.server is the one they have you using)
I'd call your ISP and tell them that you're having a problem that's likely being caused by their caching proxy. They may be able to fix it or perhaps give you instructions on an alternative route."
Thanks for that link. The info on setting an explicit web proxy in my browser has allowed me to access the VATSIM website, and I have made a similar change in the settings for a program (ServInfo) which pulls data from another VATSIM server.
Its worth keeping a little stock of proxies that you can use, you will find from time to time that sites seem to be down or slow, but its often (not always, but often) the proxies that are to blame.
I'm compiling a list of proxy problems so I'll add that site to the list
