FF to get official Google toolbar

Hey Googlebar folks, long time no talk. I thought I'd drop you a note
to give a heads up on something Google will be releasing next week: a
version of our IE Toolbar for Firefox. It will most likely be released
on July 7th, but press releases will go out at 9pm on July 6th. Since
you were in the Google-toolbar-for-firefox space first, it's
conceivable that the press might contact you for comment. If they do
it would be great if you could hold of replying until our press
releases go out on the 6th.

Is it just me or does anyone else find the google bar unneccesary. I only have to type a word in my URL bar and press enter and I get to google.
Maybe its just me.

Hmmm.... the three big distros at the time, Red Hat, Suse and Mandrake, all moved to 8.0 roughly at the same time, so I think it means "any Linux distribution running a 2.4 kernel". I don't really see how this is relevant though -- surely it's only the Firefox version that's important?

There's no truth in the rumour that bigger is better

Depends on how it is implemented I suppose, if it's working as a native application that interfaces with FF rather than as a FF extension then minimum system requirements will apply. Though usually it is the GlibC version rather than Kernel version. At a guess they've probably just gone for some number that corresponds with the major versions like you say and is meaningful to the average home user.

Just a reminder that the FF toolbar launches today (in US so probably some time this evening here)

Google's new toolbar for The Mozilla Foundation's Firefox browser, containing almost all of the features found in Google's toolbar for Microsoft's Internet Explorer, will be available tomorrow, according to a company official.
You can download the free toolbar here starting Thursday at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time from Google, and you can download two free extensions for Firefox here, said Sundar Pichai, product manager of client software at Google.

In addition to the toolbar, Google is making available two extensions to Firefox. One lets users highlight text on a Web page and send it to a mobile device via SMS (short message service). The other one adds the Google Suggest query-refinining capability to Firefox's own search box.

Ah, but the googlebar has extra bottons for local search/pictures/search this site etc.......

And a built in spellchecker and gmail link all in one area. One extension instead of 3.

ok so far - dictionary.com still available top right 'main' toolbar, for me?
