IE crashes when he uses the back button

Hi all, my bro in law has a strange problem, I tried googling but nix ........ If he uses the back button ( and refresh, I think ) IE says it encountered a problem and needs to close, this happens every time, don't start a IE v FF v Opera thing as he's happy with IE, has anyone got a idea as to what it could be and how to fix it ?

I'm away just now but will check in via xda and give him a shout as and when, and keep you updated, or just tell him to log on as he signed up to the greatest forum just the other day

Thanks

Re: IE crashes when he uses the back button

Has he cleared the Cache, Temp, History & Offline stuff? He may have picked up something which is causing this problem.

Once all this is done I restart the computer just to be sure.

Re: IE crashes when he uses the back button

What version of IE? Has he ran a sweep for the usual nasties or tried a re-installation of IE or SP2?
When did the problem start exactly? (Just after a software install or a toolbar install or just out of the blue?) If it's recent and he is running XP he could try a restore to see if it helps but restore is only an option if he doesn't face losing any data through it.

Re: IE crashes when he uses the back button

IE has got corrupted somewhere along the lines. The trouble is, because it is built in, you can't re-install it or install a copy over the top (except going up to version 7 beta, which would be a last resort)

I'd try:

1. Removing all IE toolbars, addons, even if they worked before, so IE becomes a bare shell again.

2. If that doesn't work, do a System Restore, on the last date that he knows IE worked.

3. Puting the XP disk in and do a repair.

4. If he has access to a computer with the exact same version of IE on, you could try swapping the iexplore.exe file and the .dll files from the working copy to the non-working copy, see if you can replace the dodgy file.

5. Installing IE 7 over the top, but as a beta, it could be even mroe unstable than the one than the version he has now.

Thanks for all the ideas, looks like it'll have to wait until I get back to have a look at it, that will be tomorrow afternoon earliest, will keep you posted.
