switching cable between 2 comps

hi everybody i know this may be really stupid question but i really need this information

my friend has ntl cable broadband working at her house and i wanted to use it too and just connect the ethernet cable to my laptop, the problem is when i try to install and configure ntl software when it says to plug in the cable i do it and then i get an error that it cant renew my ip or something like that :/:/ what should i do to be able to freely switch cable between our two computers? (cause i dont need bb all the time so i wasnt thinking bout router yet) please help

Reboot the cable modem then insert the ethernet cable that should be it. If the modem is already setup then you do not need to run the disk on your laptop. You must reboot the modem each time you change the computer connected to it.

rebooting modem means plugging off the power for a while ?

Agreed.

I usually turn everything off and the main plug outlet, swap the cable to my laptop, leave it all for a minute - flick the swicth back on and wait for the lights to all sync up. Finally turn my lappy on.

At least I used to do that before I got my router.

Yep, always turn everything off before switching cables. Leave it a minute. Plug your new cable in. Then switch on again, let it do its power on test, and then boot up your new PC.
