FWIW whilst you are paying your bill to NTL your phone number is your property. You need to get your BT line active, then inform them you are porting your "old" NTL number over to their network, they should contact NTL and advise them of the transfer request, they will then contact you regarding the transfer. At least this is the way a friend was advised to do it when he transferred his number. The reasoning being that there has to be an active line to attach the transferred number too. If there isn't then you risk the number either being suspended, or reallocated to someone else.
If you cancel your line with NTL, then your number shall be suspended and go into a pool of other suspended\cancelled numbers. Theorhetically, your phone number should be "cooled" (not the correct term, but I cannot recall what that one is

) for a period of time so that anyone calling it becomes aware that the number is no longer active. IIRC BT "cool" numbers for about 6 months before reallocating them, but NTL is probably different ~ it usually is
Regardless, install BT line advise them you want to transfer a phone number in and let them do the work or at least advise you of their procedure.
