Monitor flickering

hi all, my monitor has started to flicker really badly lately, its been doing it for a few weeks now but it wasnt so bad at first,sometimes i cant read stuff on the screen, do you think i need a new monitor or is it related to something else? thanks

try it on another PC, if you can.

Sounds dodgy, but you've might aswell rule out the input, its graphics card. Try fiddling with the refresh rate, you never know, same goes with the cable.

thanks for the quick replies, yes i can borrow another monitor tomorrow, if its the monitor that is broke, can anyone recommend some nice 17'' monitors? thanks again

is that when you change the size of display icons n stuff?, sorry dont know much about it

no, right click on desktop, select properties, Settings Tab, Advanced button then Monitor Tab, look for screen refresh rate drop down .....

but flikering etc is usualy a 1st sign its on the way out

New 17" monitors, well then we get into the old debate crt vs tft etc, been a number of threads on that already so I'm not going to start that again

hey, ive just put the refresh rate on 70hz and its not flickering but its a bit bad on the eyes.

5mins later-back on 60hz and not flickering

Also make sure that the cable is fully plugged in, both ends.

The higher the refresh rate, the better
I believe 75hz is the minimum level for an office environment?

I would just buy a new one, not worth risking eye strain

Different people see flicker at differing refresh rates: some people where I work have refresh rates of 60Hz set: they don't see any flicker. I see serious flickering and can't look at their displays for any length of time without getting a headache. One person is using a refresh rate of 60Hz deliberately in getting a higher resolution and is quite happy with it.

Yes; I'd really consider 75Hz a working minimum. But it varies from monitor to monitor - how come you (or most people) can look at a TV refreshing at 25Hz and not see flicker - or a light bulb (well not directly) at 50Hz? Because each refresh takes longer to fade, so it blends into the next iteration and you don't see flicker. Each monitor refresh fades a lot faster (it's meant to) so you'll still notice flicker at higher refresh rates.

I considder 85hz the minimum I would use on any of my machines, though 75hz is also acceptable.

As for the OP's orriginal problem, have you got desktop speakers? place them too near to the monitor (the rear especially) and you will cause a flicker like that.
have you left any magenetic screwdrivers ontop of the monitor?
Is there any form of radio broadcasting equipment nearby? (Im talking more along the lines of a local radio station rather than digi-senders etc).
