Event Log Errors...

I am pretty sure we'll need faults to do something to this (at the very least), so before I call, I am wondering if anything extra would be useful (to try and keep the call as brief as possible for the faults guy/gal).

Each time we've had the DPS erase error, the TV has glitched as in the picture goes jerky (I did mention having this problem a while back, but it was rare that it happened - now its more frequent). It is most noticeable on channels like five and E4 (and some others aswell, but cant remember which ones offhand).

I don't know what happened on the 23/07/05 with that "CAK" error... I can't even remember what we were watching at the time. The Post-RS one would've happened at around about the time we turned the TV off I would say... we just turn the TV off and the STB by the button on the front of the box.

I have moved the box out of the cabinet slightly to get more air to it as someone had put videos beside the box (it wasn't me!) on Friday evening sometime if I remember right, but it seems to have made no difference.

So anyway, anything else I'd need to note before calling NTL? (I will be in front of the TV anyway when I call by the way). Our internet comes through the STB and has not been affected (that I am aware of) when these errors have come up.

Re: Event Log Errors...

The DPS and CAK messages are normal operation. They are not the cause of jerky pictures.

However, the Post-RS Errors are a problem and will cause picture breakup.

Just ring and say you've got jerky pictures, and they'll check it all out. Customers are not expected to read the event log themselves.

Re: Event Log Errors...

The guy just beat our STB up (sent some hits down)...

I'll get my coat

Said to monitor it and to hardboot it if a problem over next hour or two and to call back if still a problem afterwards

Re: Event Log Errors...

Post RS errors are basically errors that the error correction system (Reed-Solomon) failed to correct. This is what is causing glitchy pictures, and is usually a sign of poor signal quality to the box. Time to call in the engineers

Re: Event Log Errors...

Well... it had been alright as far as I know for about a fortnight (since NTL sent the hits down). I was flicking channels then and it was glitchy on one of the channels (forget which one) so I checked the log again and to my dismay, another Post-RS error
However, it was this morning at 05:20! The error was:
15/08/05 05:20:48 302 Post-RS error 29 522750

I also noticed a new error too... although this one error filled the rest of the log screen as it was listed 5 times but all on the same date and time. This line said:
14/08/05 05:13:31 547 Kal Queue Full

---

Now, I'm at the point of wondering why at around 5am for both errors as nobody is awake at this time (other than the hamster - rattling around in the cage trying to wake everyone up ) so the TV is not actually in use at the time.

I'm on an early shift in work tomorrow so I'll be calling them when I get home, but I was wondering if anyone could explain what a "Kal Queue" is and is it a big problem when it gets full?

Re: Event Log Errors...

OK, called up just now.
An engineer is attending tomorrow between 12noon and 4pm. Fingers crossed he can fix the problem!

I'll update this thread after he's been for info.

Re: Event Log Errors...

Had same fault return over the last few nights...
Phoned NTL again on 0800 052 2000
selected 3 for faults, and then 3 for DTV faults
waited 5mins and got credit control AGAIN (this has happened everytime now)
Put through to faults... waiting in a 15min queue as I type.

No wonder people don't like phoning NTL up!
