Re: Green boxes??
The large one is the feeder to the smaller cabs, at least that's what a engineer told me.

Re: Green boxes??
To the best of my knowledge, the smallest ones are the distribution amplifiers, I guess they help push data further after being as Roy said, fed from the big green cabinet. Thats a node, and where the Coax is terminated and the data is fed back to the hubsite through fibre.
I think the medium sized ones are for the phone lines but thats just an educated guess.

Re: Green boxes??
The cabinets themselves do not have IP addresses or MAC addresses. Some of the equipment within the larger cabinets may have communications ability, but often they do not. As others have said, there are different levels of cabinet which house different equipment, and the larger ones feed the smaller ones.

Re: Green boxes??
And what do those guys do all day up to their elbows in them?
Seriously, over the past couple of weeks the little green box near our house gets visited 4 times a day. Ntl vans and 3rd party contractors all pay it flying visits.
The last guy (about 10 mins ago) was in an unmarked van, he's been 3 times since I got in this afternoon.
This is only the smallest of the boxes - its got about 10 coax and 10 phone connections made in it. (Someone left the door open last week)

Re: Green boxes??
In our are the small ones are crinkled lift off covers which go to the houses and we have two type of big green cabinets (different shades of green) one is used by BT (saw a BT man playing with the inside) and another NTLs
