Large shops banned from displaying cigarettes

http://news.sky.com/home/uk-news/article/16203634

Quote:
Tobacco has been banned from displays in shops as the latest anti-smoking law comes into effect in England.
The new rules mean all cigarettes and tobacco products will be kept hidden behind screens or under the counter in large shops and supermarkets.
Small shops will follow suit in 2015, allowing them more time to refit shelves and cabinets.
Smoking causes 80,000 preventable deaths each year and costs the NHS £5bn annually.
So from today supermarkets and other large shops will not be allowed to display tobacco products .Will it make any difference or will the kids be more curious as to what is hidden behind the big doors in the supermarket

Kids pick up the habit at school from other kids. This will have no effect what so ever

Re: large shops banned from displaying cigarettes

I voted for 3 ,i don't see that going into a supermarket and not being able to see cigarettes is going to have much effect when for another 3 yrs the kids can go to a garage or corner shop and still stare lovingly at the bright shiny packets

Re: large shops banned from displaying cigarettes

It's the big outlets that are very careful not to sell to youngsters, yet they are the ones being persecuted in this "first wave" of legislation.

They should have started with the smaller shops first AFAIC.

But then again , I think it's all a bit pointless and just government pandering to certain lobbyists with their own agendas.

No short term effect, I think this more about changing how the next generation and generation after that perceive cigarettes.

Personally I thinks it's just one gimmick after another, either ban them completely or price them at £20 a pack.

I don't think they will as Ireland have had the ban for some years with no interference .
In my opinion it's a waste of time but if the government must have this ban then implement it in one go not phased in over 3 yrs .Young kids feeling peer preasure to start smoking do not go to supermarkets ,they will hang around outside their local corner shop and wait for a willing adult to buy them for them or they will go to a shop they know will sell to under 16s

But where does it all end Pierre as perhaps the next thing that will target will be the sale of alcohol and are they in the long run going to cover that up and stop alcohol advertising as well because alcohol health wise can be just as bad as smoking is for you.

I would argue that alcohol abuse costs far more than smoking .If you take into account all the damage and extra policing ,ambulances needed on a weekend and that's before you start factoring in costs of treating the associated illnesses

Good point. another thing is will they have a price list displayed. or do you get a 10 second flash?

it's silly when 'normal' shops can still display theirs for another 3 years.

hiding them from view will not stop people taking up the habit. the habit isn't started from liking the look of a packet, loving the price, so buying a few to take home.

all this is (apart from another step towards the nanny state) is the government wants to be seen as doing something. they want us to smoke as much as possible because there's billions of pounds worth of profit in it. as long as they're seen to be doing something then they are quite happy to take the billions of pounds worth of tax money made from the drug.

its very strange you stand at the counter and all you see is white shutter doors -i know when i shop i like to see all of the other brands and prices on offer , as far as i can see this is restricting the sale of goods and is not in the spirit of EU trade agreements its a stupid idea pandering to the stupid in our society

They may probably do just that.

What they managed to do is make smoking socially unacceptable. So that wider society don't care how hard you hit the smoker, and not only have they gone after the smoker in public areas but they are now going after him in his own home.

It is quite possible, with the right campaign, to try and make drinking, or certainly drinking to excess, socially unacceptable too.

So I don't know where it will end.

I do know one thing, prices will go up....all the time
