Ring motion detector distance

I’m thinking of getting a Ring doorbell as added security for my car.

My driveway is directly in front of my front door with a path of about 12 to 15 feet in the way.

I’ve seen conflicting information about the range of the sensor and it seems like different generations have varying distances - I’m more likely to go for an older reconditioned generation to keep the cost low.

Can anyone shed light on whether the older generations will cover that distance?

I was looking into one and read that certain parts of the view can be masked to stop things like moving branches triggering them, and range can also be set. But each model and brand is different. Just be careful that you don't have a "Karen" living opposite who is itching to make an invasion of privacy complaint.

Mine does not detect the street in front of my door which I think is a shorter distance than you. I set it up that way though it would detect further. Mine in the peephole replacement version

As MrM says, Eufy gear is good, however I use a doorbell by Aosu (about £100 on Amazon, maybe less). The range is very good and you can dial it down if you want. I have it on a low setting and it still picks up people as soon as they enter the driveway about 5 M from the door.
I realise I haven't answered your initial question, unfortunately I have no experience of the Ring doorbell.

I had Ring camera Gen2*, and I could adjust the range to only include our driveway (about 15 feet) and ignore the path running in front of it - you can set "exclusion zones"..

*replaced it with a Blink camera when Ring raised their monthly subscription price to £4.99 - I can store the clips locally with Blink on a USB stick

No subscription fee and with HomeKit support, you get videos uploaded to the cloud for free if you have iCloud+ subscription as well as local SD card storage. I have a ring doorbell and it covers my entire drive and a bit of the pavement. However you can choose the area it will activate in. Otherwise mine would activate everytime the neighbours go out or come home. You can also turn on alerts for motion detection or just when the doorbell is pressed.

Yea we have one and its amazing what that LITTLE camera picks up!!!

Its scsry really...... What I like is you can just talk and it sends your video,ya dont have to press the button......

Cheers all, I went for a Blink doorbell in the end as Amazon had a deal that came with an Echo Pop (I already have 3 Echos around the place) and was in the market for an Echo to be placed near my front door so I can use it to switch my hallway lights on when I get in.

The Blink works really well and covers my car area (and a whole lot more it seems, people passing by in front of the car give me notifications too.

I get 1 month's free cloud service for only £3 per month once the trial is over but I managed to pick up a Sync Module on ebay for £23 so that's all I need to keep things more secure.

Personally, I would avoid anything that places recordings anywhere but within your own LAN. I invested in the Ubiquiti Unifi ecosystem at home a number of years ago (and continue to do so) and in my opinion, it is fantastic for home use. The devices, ease of installation, the configuration options and the front end are all superb. Well worth the input. All my APs, switches, cameras, cloudkey and the router are part of the ecosystem and work flawlessly and beautifully together. Everything is on my home network, contained and nothing is send or stored on some third part server, but I can still access everything from anywhere, delivered directly from my own hardware. No subscriptions, no cloud-based servers. It's all mine once purchased and I control it all. If you are wanted to invest in home security and networking, this is where I recommend putting your money.

You can add ONVIF compatible third party cameras to the setup as well, however the AI recognition elements won't work with them. But you can still record to your NVR. Personally, I stick to their products for full compatibility and features.

I've used other systems in the past like Neos Smartcams and Amazon's Blink and they are just awful in comparison. Night and day in terms of, well, everything about them.

Via a USB connection, yes. The performance is horrendous. And if you get the WiFi connected devices, the delays are painful. And if you go even further with battery powered devices, you’ll be forever changing the batteries even on low sensitivity settings, which then render it next to useless. In my experience.

I binned it off pretty quickly as it didn’t meet my expectation of operation. Hopefully others have a different experience considering the cost of it.
