The dramatic sell-off in China's main stock market has continued despite efforts by regulators to try to stem the losses.

The Shanghai Composite index plunged 8% on opening, taking the drop in share values to 30% since their June peak.

On Wednesday, another 500 listed firms said they would stop trading their shares in an effort to insulate themselves from the meltdown.

Around 1,300 firms have halted trading, almost half of China's main shares.

IG chief market strategist Chris Weston dubbed the sell-off "Black Wednesday".

"For the first time, The China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC) has admitted there is genuine 'panic selling' underway.

"When we see around 90% of the market suspended or falling by their daily limit (while further measures have been taken to limit the influence seemingly exerted by futures traders) you know things are becoming less rational," he said.

The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI fell 261.49 points, or 1.47 percent, to end at 17,515.42. The S&P 500 .SPX lost 34.65 points, or 1.66 percent, to 2,046.69 and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC dropped 87.70 points, or 1.75 percent, to 4,909.76.

Factory activity in China shrank at its fastest pace in more than six years in August, data suggests.

The private Caixin/Markit manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) dropped to 47.1 from 47.8 in July. A figure below 50 indicates contraction.

The data triggered another sell off in Chinese shares, which ended the day down more than 4%.

The factory data is likely to compound global worries that the Chinese economy is set for a continued slowdown.

I'm not desperately worried just yet. In our case it's just some of the QE cash being released from the markets and in the case of the Chinese it's liquidating assets.

Yes it is. There's a whole load of eggs sitting in the Chinese basket. Few people trust the Chinese version of 'facts' anymore and that's adding to the uncertainty which is translating itself into red trading screens around the globe. From what I've heard, it seems their growth figures are being dramatically overstated and their lack of transparency about such matters is simply compounding the problem. We're in for a very rough ride I reckon.

Well this hasn't gone away:

Trading on mainland Chinese markets has been halted for the day after shares fell more than 7% for the second time this week.

The "circuit-breaker" rule, introduced to stem volatility, was triggered in the first 30 minutes of trading, making it China's shortest ever trading day.

Investors are nervous after the central bank moved to weaken the yuan.

This indicates that Beijing is looking to boost exports, as China's economy may be slowing more than expected.
