slow download ?
i have superhub and 50meg package , why is it that sometimes i can have 53meg d/load speed downstairs and at the same time only 5meg upstairs ? i have the upstairs ps connected through two 100 mbs ethernet switches but i dont think the switches are the problem as sometimes i am getting 50meg upstairs , and i dont think its virgin media throttling the speed as i wouldnt get 50meg downstairs and not upstairs . has anyone any ideas as to why this could be and would swapping the 100mbs switches for gigabit switches help to speed things up ? thanks

Re: slow download ?
If you're getting 50meg downstairs at the same time as you're getting 5meg upstairs, then the issue lies with whatever's between the two - cables, switches or other machines.

Re: slow download ?
Or he's reached the limit on a 50meg connection. I don't know how the superhub shares out the bandwidth, is first come first served or what? Why 2 switches? Is the connection from upstairs Ethernet or powerline?

That would be the "Other machines" part
It doesn't matter how the superhub "shares" its bandwidth", it only has so much bandwidth to share.

Re: slow download ?
im using two switches because i have tv boxes downstairs so all ports on switch downstairs are being used part from one , which i have run upstairs to another switch and from this there is a pc and a ps4 and another tv box ( this is why two switches are required ) . could the switches be intermittently faulty ? is it worth buying 2 new 100mbs switches or would giga switches be better ? i renewed the ethernet cable last week so ive eliminated that . thanks

Re: slow download ?
any switches you buy these days are going to be gigabit switches. I would take a look at these if you are thinking of replacing them
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linksys-5-Po...+5+port+switch
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linksys-8-Po...linksys+switch
I have done the same as you on a slightly larger scale and in 4 rooms around the house upstairs and downstairs I have printers, pcs, laptops, tvs, bluray players, sky boxes, media servers and nas servers all connected by 3 of those switches above and a couple of Linksys routers. I stream a tonne of content from the nas servers to the tvs and never ever have any problems at all.
If I were you and thinking of replacing the switches, I would also (to the point it would actually be my number 1 priority) consider buying a proper router and putting the shub in modem mode. Every time I see a post like yours it is always somebody using a shub in router mode, I have never seen a post with somebody with the same problem using a proper router!
Food for thought:

Re: slow download ?
you don't need to setup any static routes. The switches will work out of the box and automatically learn the mac addresses of each of the devices connected to them. The router will require a bit of setting up which I/we can talk you through and all the devices on your network will receive an ip address from the router via dhcp. Included in that information will be the ip address of the router which is the gateway for your network so all the devices know that if they are sending information to an address outside of your subnet then it needs to go to the router and be sent out on the internet. The important thing for you is to setup an appropriate addressing scheme if you want to change it from the default and to setup the wireless network which involved setting an ssid, password, encryption etc. Getting a new router is less about settings and more about quality. You get what you pay for and when you pay for a proper router you get better wireless, better features and better stability. As an example, forgetting the abysmal wireless performance of shub1, as soon as you put any load onto it and especially if you started copying large amounts of data from one device to another, it just gave up and crashed. Proper routers just work! I can't remember the last time I had to restart my router. It has been many months if not over a year now.

Re: slow download ?
Before you start replacing anything, you need to determine where the fault actually lies. You have a LOT of devices on your network, are you absolutely 100% certain that none of them are in use when you're getting your lower speed test?

Re: slow download ?
I half agree with Kush. Yes you do need to identity the cause of the issue but investing in a new router and switches wouldn't be a complete waste of money if they turned out not to be the problem. You obviously want a multipurpose network which is only going to grow in the future and you need to make sure you have the appropriate network infrastructure in place to accommodate your requirements. The best way I explain it is you can give somebody superman feet and superman eyes but if you have got a spine and nerves which cant handle the super speed then you aren't going to get anywhere.
I spent the best part of £400 a couple of years ago on new routers, switches and cabling knowing that I was going to buy networked tvs, nas servers, printers etc etc and wanted to make sure everything would work properly and I wouldn't be throwing a tantrum every night. Now everyone in my house can do their own thing; I can be playing games of downloading torrents in my room, somebody can be streaming content from one of the servers to the tv downstairs, someone else can be gaming in another room and someone else can be youtubing etc and nobody would know because everything works perfectly altogether at the same time. I don't care how awesome shub2 and shubac are, I don't trust cheapo naff free stuff to handle those kind of demands which are critical to my lifestyle. I wouldn't live very long if we were unable to watch stuff like Homeland, Walking Dead, Greys and Vampire Diaries every week You can spend £1000 on a super duper tv and £400 on a games console but none of it means anything if you cant get them to work and do what they are supposed to do.
Your speed issues might be to do with something else entirely but I would still buy a proper router and switches if you want to do the sort of things you have talked about. Freebie routers just aren't up for it.

Re: slow download ?
Not disagreeing at all, I just would rather OP knew where the problem was before spending money on equipment that might not be a problem or a bottleneck.
