Tivo install and a need to extend cable?

Hi guys.
Currently have Virgin Media broadband, phone and TV and still have the free M Package TV on my account which we haven't used for a few years.

Anyway. i noticed i could get a Tivo box and a better TV package for the same monthly price and decided to go for it. Got the Tivo box on Wednesday and its telling me to simply swap boxes over, but i haven't had that box connected for years.

Now, outside the house there is a box with a splitter and 2 cables coming off it. 1 is going over and around the back of the house where the superhub is located and the other cable has gone up the front of the house, and into one of the bedrooms where the old box was originally installed.

I would like the Tivo box connected out the back where the superhub is located, and was wondering, is it a simple case of leaving the connections on the outside of the house alone and then disconnecting the superhub from the connection at the wall, add a splitter there and connect both, the Superhub and Tivo box that way? Or would i need to extend the cable which is located upstairs?

Sorry if this sounds confusing but it seems the easiest way of explaining it
Thanks for any help.

Re: Tivo install and a need to extend cable?

Thanks for the reply.

Doing this won't effect any power/signal levels would it?

I have asked this question on different forums and seem to be getting mixed answers, some saying its fine and some saying its against Virgin's TOC and that i need an engineer out because of the signal problems with extending cables etc etc.

Thanks again.

Re: Tivo install and a need to extend cable?

It will halve your signal levels just like any other two-way split. Whether that will cause a problem depends on what your signal levels were to begin with.

It's against Virgin's TOC to modify cables on their side of the demarcation point. Anything coming out of the socket on the inside of your house is yours to mess with any way you like, though bearing in mind if you break something VM will charge you for fixing it.

Thanks again for your help guys.

Thats good to know then, as i wouldn't touch anything outside the house as thats out of my depth.

I might give it ago then. i have some RG6 cable at home would that work ok?

Why not get virgin to do it for free, when the box arrives you can ask for a techncian to fit it as your missing cables

Re: Tivo install and a need to extend cable?

Wouldn't Virgin charge though considering we originally had the old silver Virgin TV box installed?

Also any idea if RG6 cable would work?
