Ntlworld email problem using 3G

I am currently unable to send email using 3G or 3rd party wifi. Using Ipad

my email works fine on my home wifi connection, but when I'm away from home I can't send email. I can receive mail just not send it.

When I try I get an error message which says "cannot send mail" the user name or password for SMTP xxxxxx@ntlworld.com @smtp.ntlworld is incorrect.

I have been in touch with Virgin several times and they have checked that all settings are ok.

Primary server smtp.ntlworld.com
using SSL
authentication - Password
port 465

I have tried changing password, deleting and recreating account and resetting ipad. Still no Joy.

Today I tried to send an email from a coffee shop using their wifi. My ipad failed my wife who has an iPad set up exactly the same way sent email no problem. The only difference is that I updated to IOS8 she didn't.

I took it to the Apple Store and went through all this with them. After a while they suggested because ntlworld email was old that iOS 8 DNS protocol was not compatible with there servers. My argument was that if this was the case surely everyone with a Ntlworld email address who is using IOS8 would be having the same problem. The best he could come up with was that not many people use ntlworld emails. All sounds a bit wishy washy to me.

My question is firstly is anyone else that is using ios8 and ntlworld email having this problem and does anyone have any ideas on how I might solve this problem.

Just noticed that since he reset my iPad my 3G service is no longer working. Went in with one problem and came out with two, (give me strength!!!)

Cheers

Re: Ntlworld email problem using 3G

I had similar SMTP problems. They have changed the settings at their end so you must now allow authentication and enter you FULL email address and password.

The info (ports, etc) they have been giving out are wrong AFAIK. I just use the defaults.

Re: Ntlworld email problem using 3G

Thanks Taf.

I am using my full email address as user name. When you say allow authentication do you mean authentication = Password, as that's the way it's set.

What are the default info ports?

I currently have primary server set to SMPT.Ntlworld.com port 465
Secondary server set to SMPT.virginmedia.com port 465

Incoming mail (which I'm not having a problem with is set to IMAP.Ntlworld.com port 993.

Until I get 3G working again it's going to be difficult to check if any fix has worked as when at home email works fine, it's only when I'm away from home.

Cheers

Is this just a typo? Do you mean SMPT or SMTP?

It should be SMTP.

What other Authentication options do you have? Is SSL turned on?

Re: Ntlworld email problem using 3G

Pop port 110
SMTP port 25

Authentication on both = Auto

User name on both jimsmith@ntlworld.com

Password on both ********
