4k or 1080p

We have a reasonably good 42" 1080 lg TV but i keep hanging my nose over 50"+ 4k TV's. Is it worth at the moment getting 4k even tho I don't yet have any 4k content and/or do they upscale 720/1080 well enough to warrant the purchase.

They do upscale to 1080 but i wouldnt warrent getting a 4k TV at the moment as the content is still very limited.

If u think about it 1080HD channels are still very limited at this time so its gonna be a good few years before 4K really takes off and by that time prices would have dropped and newer technology would have come along giving u more for your money.

It's catch 22, I heard that for the 2018/2022 world cup sony will be brold casting on 8k, I even head on tech shows 16k TVs being talked about.

I am referred to at work as The Geek as I love my technology, but 4k TVs are too big for my room.

at this stage, 1080p. there isn't a lot of 4k content out yet that's easily available. at least, not without also upgrading AV amps, media players and the such as well in order to actually play it let alone any Sky or VM boxes which can actually do 4k.

much like HD when it first came out, by the time there is a lot of noteworthy content, prices will have come WAY down and the technology, such as the panels used and so on, will be much better.

as Hom3r pointed out, the world cup in 2018 may be broadcast in 4k, bu that's still 3 years away. a lot will (have to) change in that time, including (if you want to watch it in 4k) your Sky / VM tv box! But right now, you'll be paying a lot for 4k. if you put the same amount into a 1080p screen, it will be much better in terms of the tech and options - not all panels are made the same. Any Which? TV review will prove that to you.

4k WILL be the next step, unlike 3d and curved screens. 3d just isn't really worth the money (plus the complete lack of content once broadcasters realised it actually isn't all that). As for curved screens - what a waste of money. that really is just a gimmick to push sales until 4K takes off and becomes mainstream. it's one of those items that produces a lot of post-purchase justification from those who invested, but really, they are just suffering from cognitive dissonance because they fell for the marketing!

It strikes me as strange when you see 4K TV's being advertised on the commercial channels and the voice over states "look at the difference in stunning 4K"

When I'm watching the advert on my middle of the road 4 yr old Toshiba?, aye right!

I'd be tempted to look at OLED when the new round of TV's come out in a few months over 4k. 'Supposedly' they'll be cheaper this year.

Think I'll hang on for a bit before getting a new TV then.
Although my TV is 4 years old it does deliver a good picture, although the sound is crap which is why we purchased a soundbar.

I have a 4K monitor on my pc and it's great for gaming but for films etc it is wasted.

Yes 1080p footage will scale up as much as possible however, you can tell the difference almost straight away when you look at it.

TV is broadcasted iirc in 1080i at most so a 1080p screen is already being wasted unless you watch alot of Blu-Ray films.

I would personally hold out and wait, till next year when hopefully they will not only be far cheaper but also becoming with more features and accept 60hz refresh rates without having to mess around.

Definitely no. Most current 4K TVs will not be able to play copy-protected 4K content once it is available.

There will not be any new OLED TVs this year. All OLED manufacturers have abandoned development temporarily in favour of QD 4K TVs.

Incorrect, the same company that were pushing them last year are bringing out new ones this year at supposedly lower prices, LG. The focus is switching to QD but LG are still trying push OLED forward.

Even LG are concentrating on quantum dot 4K.

Actually you're right, most of the recent models are 2.2 capable now. Most AV receivers still aren't though.
