Chicken or Egg 4K
I just read the news on the front page of this forum that Virgin Media do not plan to offer any 4k broadcasts any time soon.
Now I was in Currys, PC world on Sunday, and being a bloke, like you do, I wandered down the TV section, and saw a vast array of TV's that were ultra HD 4K
They were very impressive, I must say. But with nobody broadcasting in 4k, why would you buy one? What's the point.
So, virgin say, not until customers demand, and me the customer says not until they broadcast something….. stalemate….

its a good point, my (probably misplaced) belief that yes its is 4k ready but by standard it must mean its the best HD1080 out there as there is a variety of what is or not HD. Out of interest are TV by standard with 3D or is that now gone?

Having read 'What hi fi sound and vision' my understanding is that the only current source of 4K broadcasts is Netflix, yet some so called 4K ready TVs (including Panasonic) will NOT play the Netflix films in 4K. If I had just spent a couple of thousand on such a TV to find it would not play 4K I would be most displeased!
The lesson seems to be to hang on until they get all this sorted.

Ideally i'd like to see them push higher bitrates and DTS audio on 1080p streaming content instead of the watered down files they currently give us. But then people wouldn't be running out to buy the newest fad, 4k TV's.

I know what you mean.
I specifically bought a 1080p TV for my kitchen wall. Now at the time I could watch HD on it, but got rid of sky. The TV has a built in tuner, but the tuner is not HD, Not even 720i on free view. Total con LG.
Guess I was an early adopter to that technology too… I won't be bitten again with 4k.
Oh, and if you can get netflix in 4k, via which box?

No box at the moment just select 4K TV's , the reviews I saw viewing House of Cards Season 2 in 4K were certainly a mixed bag.

That means I would need an ethernet cable from my router to the TV. More bloody wiring.
I've certainly go the bandwidth with Virginmedia…

Netflix does offer some 4K stuff and there are some 4K Blu Rays out there but its still very early days for 4K.
