Superhub Business Superhub modem mode?

Our business has had its first ever cable connection hooked up last week (50Mbit VM business with a single static IP).

In the past we've used ADSL links so we'd always chose our own routers, but of course this time we've been given a business superhub. This is causing us some difficulty with our VPNs as the superhub is doing its own firewalling/NAT.

Is it possible to put the Business Superhub in to modem only mode? I've been told that if I stump up the extra for five static IPs I can use one for my own netgear router and this will effectively give me modem mode, but is this the only way?

The business version of the Superhub doesn't have a modem mode at this time due to the way it connects to the VM network.

Ahaa. Do you know if its likely to be added in the near future or will we just have to pay the extra fiver for 5 static IPs?

I would pay the extra £5 tbh dude. If you ring them up they'll tell you they are working on it but they have been saying that for the last 2 years so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Sounds like a plan. We've been using the VM link to run an event here that doesn't need VPN access. The bandwidth and stability have been bang on to be fair.

You can turn off settings such as the firewall in the business superhub. If you have your own LAN router, then let that do the heavy lifting and simply treat the superhub as the gateway pointing all traffic from the router to the WANside IP of your own router.

Rob that doesnt work that well... what I had to do in the past was either put the ip of the your modem router into DMZ.

To be honest I would get the static ip addresses and have it that way. I was told as well that VM are testing modem only internally for over a year now and no news.

I've been trying to use it like that but no joy. Even with the LAN router in the DMZ the superhub is applying its own NAT and I think this is what's breaking it (though I have used an ADSL router in front of a LAN router before and it worked OK). I might give the settings one last tweak tomorrow to try and get some sense.

The 5 static IP address plan seems to be the one that makes sense as that should bypass all of the NAT/Firewalling on the shub meaning my LAN router will be able to sort itself out unhindered.

I have the same setup here you need - you need to call VM Business and have them activate the routed SUBNET option for you. you have a static single address so the Superhub still performs NAT. If you switch to the routed subnet option you get a block of addresses and the Superhub is no longer in NAT mode. This way you get to assign a public routable IP address to equipment sitting on the LAN side of the superhub and can terminate your VPN tunnel there. I do this with a Cisco 892 router behind the Business superhub.

In terms of modem mode - I gather from my contact in VMB they are about to roll out a firmware upgrade to the business superhubs to enable that.

Out of interest did you get a Superhub 1 or 2 with your new business service?

I have a Superhub 1 running BUS_V2.37.06, however the GUI regularly locks up so suspect it is faulty. I am wondering if I call in for a replacement whether I'd get a SH1 or 2... Not sure if they are using any SH2s for the business service just yet.

I gather there are also plans to launch a 100 Mb/s business service later this year.

Thanks for the info. I called VM Business yesterday and they should be calling me back today to sort it.

I don't know which superhub we got sorry. The coax terminates in a central equipment room and my boss oversaw the install so I haven't seen it. The details I saw from the config page are:

Hardware Version 2.00
Software Version BUS_V2.37.06

Business only uses SH1.

Well I finally got some sense out of the unit yesterday. I put the new IP subnet range on the unit and got it straight out on to the web but it still wouldn't pass traffic. I spent an hour swearing at it until I finally found the answer.

It seems that turning the superhub's firewall off, doesn't. I had to enable the firewall then allow PPTP/IPSec traffic through, and it started working straight away then.
