Question Strange wireless behavior (SH2)

Okay, this one has me stumped, so perhaps someone else can help me.

I live in a reasonably sized house, with a granny flat on the side, in which my parents live.

Historically we had a Superhub 1 (then a 2) covering the main house, with a powerline adapter providing a connection to a separate router located next to an adjoining wall so that my parents had internet too.

This worked fine, but was a little cumbersome, so once we got a SH2 and realized the wireless was much better, we switched to using that to cover both houses.

When it works, it works great, however we've started getting some odd behaviour from both of my parents Windows laptops.

Every few days, they'll get booted from the wireless and told their password is wrong, even though it isn't. Nothing they can do at their end fixes it, leaving the only solution as power-cycling the hub at which point both laptops magically decide they *do* have the correct password.

I've tried everything and am getting no where, any suggestions?

Re: Strange wireless behavior (SH2)

Is the SH SSID set to be auto-selected on your parents' laptops?

Re: Strange wireless behavior (SH2)

Yup, I believe so.

My laptops and phones and their phones don't have the issue.

So the only commonality between the two devices they have issues with are they're both Win7

Re: Strange wireless behavior (SH2)

The auto-connect will need confirming before proceeding much further. You can imagine that if they have to connect via the network icon and select an SSID, a neighbour's SSID could be entered first time and the right one next time. Sort of thing. That has to be eliminated.

To be clear - because your description is a little ambiguous to my eyes - the wireless drops (for whatever reason) and when they reconnect:

1/
If it's not automatic, they would choose an SSID and provide a password.

2/
If it's automatic connection, the password is provided by Windows

So exactly what is happening?

If you returned to the Powerline solution, presumably this won't happen? I don't find our Powerlines cumbersome st all; I'm so pleased to have them. Mind you, I'm in modem mode because I don't believe in these combo modems even though the SH2 is decent wireless.

Re: Strange wireless behavior (SH2)

It is on auto connect.

Basically its fine for days/weeks then all of a sudden they get kicked from the wireless and have "failed to connect to wireless" messages. attempts to connect manually are met with password errors (even when i try) and deleting the SSID from their pcs and starting again makes no difference.

One i reboot the SH2 they can once again connect fine. No other devices experience any problems like this at any point.

Re: Strange wireless behavior (SH2)

Are you able to paste a screenshot of Control Panel/Network and Internet/Manage Wireless Networks ? And please let us know which SSID is the one in question. Thanks

Re: Strange wireless behavior (SH2)

I had a SH2 changed for this, exactly the same behaviour, clients disconnected and would not reconnect. New clients not able to connect to the network until the SH was powercycled. Wired connections OK and other clients OK.

After the usual run around from the helpdesk (they actually said the cable power levels were too low) and sent a tech out. Once I explained the problem to him he went straight out to his van and got a new SH. He said is was a "known problem".

Since the new SH the problem has not occurred again.

Still facing problems with my HP printer randomly disconnecting and reconnecting by itself, but thats another story!
