Coin

This could be interesting if it comes to fruition:
Quote:
Q. What is a Coin?
A. Coin is a connected device that can hold and behave like the cards you already carry. Coin works with your debit cards, credit cards, gift cards, loyalty cards and membership cards. Instead of carrying several cards you carry one Coin. Multiple accounts and information all in one place.

Q. How do I get my cards onto a Coin?
A. Our mobile app will allow you to add, manage and sync the cards that you choose to store on your Coin. The process of adding card information to the mobile app is very simple and is done by taking a picture or two and swiping your Coin through a small device we provide you with.
Same size as a credit/debit card & can be used in an ATM. Not yet compatible with chip & pin, but will be sometime in the future.

Re: Coin

Looks like a neat idea. I would certainly be interested in using one if it could hold store card details, just to clear out all my loyalty cards from my purse would make it an attractive proposition. I would have to be convinced it was very safe to use it as a debit/credit card though.

Re: Coin

So, you're going to pay these people to skim all your cards, together with the CVV numbers, in the comfort of your own home?

Re: Coin

My phone has NFC.

NFC is the future of buying stuff, on a night out you will only need keys and your mobile. You will just select the card you want to use in the app and pay with that.

PINs will still be used for security or fingerprints.

Couldn't agree more, I use NFC tags for quite a few work/home tasks.
Linked to switch profiles, launch apps just by placing my phone next to the tag.

Just need more shops/services offering NFC payment capabilities.

Except at the moment nobody offers combi NFC "cards" or phones - each one requires a separate account or pre-paid balance, that's the biggest pain.

My phone can already imitate my cards and be used for payment - yet companies are too hung up in their own proprietary "tap wallet" systems to actually build one that works with your existing account.

Nonetheless, lots of shops are offering NFC payments now. McDonalds, Starbucks, Tesco, Scotmid, Marks & Spencer, Costa, etc.

Nowhere near everywhere, and it'd be nice to become standard but that's a while off.

Theoretically any NFC phone can also be used to take payments via contactless cards for business owners as well.

Re: Coin

Just sounds like a magnetic swipe skimmer/cloner to me.

Plus if it doesn't work with chip and pin, it's nearly useless in the UK is it not?

Re: Coin

The technology exists, South Korea have been using it for over 2 years.

Click have covered it.
