Virgin Media to start charging for Security

Just had an email saying that after a years free trial of F-Secure you will be charged £7.5 per quarter there after.

Another additional charge while reducing the services in a package!!!

It's rubbish anyway, just go out and get Avast or AVG free... Or even better, Microsoft Security Essentials.

You can pay it yearly for £25, if you want to that is. I don't know if any other broadband providers give you free security, but personally it's not really a problem. It's no different to getting free online play for the PS3 but having to pay for it with a PS4. There's plenty of good and free options out there which we'll use once the F-Secure free years trial ends.

Re: Virgin Media to start charging for Security

Whatever you do don't get Microsoft Security Essentials as it's got a very low detection rate and Microsoft made a recent statement that it should not be used alone without another full Antvirus. Kaspersky is top of the pay antivirus checkers and then come Avast etc. for the free ones. I personally use Kaspersky on my Windows 8 machine and Avast on the others.

Re: Virgin Media to start charging for Security

Still better than Norton.

http://www.av-comparatives.org/wp-co..._201309_en.pdf

Kaspersky is also NOT top, they are joint third. Kaspersky misses 66% more samples than Avira, G-Data, and F-Secure who ARE top.

Yes, in the most recent file detection tests done by industry experts, F-Secure is in joint 1st place.

what? that kind of defeats the whole point of having it if you are going to rely on another anti virus prog.

I don't get your gripe, if it was a free years trial and it's the end of your free year?

Also, what are reduction in services you mention?

and I am sure that in the small print it will say everything they need to get out of it whenever they want; it is free and provided with no obligation to provide tech support, ot responsible for any losses of faults, offer may be withdrawn at any time bla bla

Re: Virgin Media to start charging for Security

Personally I dont rate MSE, microsoft think its ok for it to start doing full scans when the machine is idle, if they having to automate full scans it suggests they not confident it can protect without those scans.

Avast is ok for a free choice, but lately they more spammy.

On my main rig (and I think my laptop) I pay for nod32 a/v (not the one that includes f/w), I use windows firewall for firewall.

Re: Virgin Media to start charging for Security

Unless VM have somehow broke it F-Secure is currently #1 for detection reliability.

Re: Virgin Media to start charging for Security

I thought F Secure was a temporary measure while VM are programming (ballsing up) their new security software
