We moved about 2 mins round the corner from the old house but no cable???
How, when will i know if i will be getting cable in the area im at now?
CS were not very helpful when i asked about it.

Re: Will i ever get fibre optic?
There used to be an email address you could send requests to to get your street cabled. I know they have got to draw the line somewhere but having one street cabled and another not sounds silly. Like dash said though, you can go to the Infinity site and it will tell you when fttc is coming to your area. I know it is annoying atm but it will be well worth the wait.

This doesnt really help but hey ho..
The BT infinity site only provides me with a result(yes you can/no you cant) not a date..
Does anyone have a link to a site that can tell me if i will be getting this service?

Re: Will i ever get fibre optic?
Ohhh man ... i know how you feel ...
You remind me when had FTTC and moved at new address and stuck with adsl (Not that is bad) but 2,8 speed propebly can not even see a HD movie
Luckily for me VM has fast broadband at new address
Use the address & check Availability Date.
http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome
This is the most accurate checker ... If not dates or named FTTC service given ... i am afraid you are unlucky & you will stay long time with just adsl line ... unless you move again
You can try call VM if is any near plans for getting the street cabled but will not hold my breath
Good Luck

Re: Will i ever get fibre optic?
Thanks all
I tried the dsl checker and had zero luck..
I recently spoke to a virgin engineer and he said the local council has put a block on any more fiber optic cable work in the area due to funding and the disturbance of the work that goes into it.????
This is absolute twaddle in my eyes and i will be using the email supplied (thanks btw) to vent about it.
Im sure if i contact the local MP, she will be able to help.
Gonna go get my citizen smith hat and fight the power!!
Wish me luck

I think it will be somewhere in the middle dude. I am not too sure of the physical work involved but last year the BT site said my exchange had been enabled for Infinity but when I popped my postcode in it said I couldn't get it. I as confused and rang the helpline and all the pleb on the end of the phone did was whack my postcode into the checker and told me I couldn't get it so I gtave up. A couple of weeks later the postcode checker changed and I could get it. You might not have to wait as long as you think

Re: Will i ever get fibre optic?
End of March is a placeholder date it's not anything set in stone or even a guess. If it says anything in a 3 month increment ie Dec, March, June etc then they don't know when they'll be doing it.
That doesn't mean you won't get it though. My postcode for example went from Dec to March to June currently yet the new FTTC box has been up beside my Cab for a couple of months now so it's on the way... at some point.

I'm not a lawyer, but as I undestand there is a general presumption of wayleave for telecom providers except where the works would disturb a conservation area. Seeing as BT are present in said areas, there would be few reasonable grounds for a council to refuse VM.
I guess you'll need to ferret deeper into VM who, I suspect, don't really care because it would be easier to increase the business from an existing street.

So basically VM have had the block put on supplying cable to the area but BT havent??
I do know that my area is Infinity enabled just not physically to my address, so by what you say all i need to do is badger BT to get the proverbial finger out and i might get it sooner.
I have emailed the link supplied btw..

Re: Will i ever get fibre optic?
These is a difference between the work VM will need to do and what BT will need to do though. For VM they will normally need to dig up pavements/roads to lay a fibre and power to a new cabinet and copper to each house. In the case of BT all they often have to do is pull a fibre down an existing duct to an existing cabinet, and then change the kit inside that cabinet. The wires to the houses are already there.
Sometimes the work goes a little beyond this if there are limitations in the existing duct or cabinet, e.g. power and space. In that case the work is often limited to the cabinet or its surrounds. I have heard that if there are duct problems they just skip the upgrade on the specific cabinet and the customers it serves, at least in the short term, leaving groups of people with no upgrade!

Sounds exactly right..Heres the reply i got from VM
Hi Stephen,
Thank you for your enquiry regarding Virgin Media providing digital
services at your home.
Unfortunately for us to make this area serviceable with digital services
would be too expensive and would cost more than our current budget
allows, so therefore cannot be considered to be upgraded by our infill
activity at this time.
As we find new ways of serving areas such as this that are outwith the
existing network, we will look at your request further and may be able
to include this in build programmes in future years. However at this
time, we will not be able to provide cable service to this area.
I appreciate this is not good news, but be assured our team will
continue to look for other solutions that may help us achieve this in
the future.
Best regards
The Cablemystreet Team
