Wireless Access Points (or Repeaters) any suggestions?

Despite the devices being in the room exactly above the Superhub (yes, I know) my speeds are a bit pants, especially on the Xbox. The wiring doesn't support powerlines so I'm in need of an AP / repeater.

Any suggestions?

If you happen to have an old dlink 615 hanging around from the pre-superhub times, you can install DD-WRT firmware on in and use it as a repeater.

Put the SH into modem mode, and try a Tenda N60 (Dual band) for £35.

Try tilting the Superhub through say 60-90degress. The two patch aerials in the SH are highly directional patches relying on signal reflections within the house.

The two antenna in the Superhub are about as omnidirectional as you can possibly get.

They are also angled at +/- 45' so for V/H polarized antennas the optimum tilt is 45'. Not that 3dB will make any noticeable difference.

1. They may be omni in the horizontal plane but the OP is directly above the
router. An omni in both V & H planes is not possible with a single aerial. With two aerials at 2.4GHz there would be too much destructive interference.

2. Not in the last one I saw opened. The signal strength of an omni at an angle above/below the horizon is gain dependant.

There is a reason many post here about bad signal quality from a SH, but not so much of those with an external omni. Like my old DG Netgear or my now FG one. Two aerials are used for diversity reception and if not implemented properly...see the OP query.

1. Incorrect.

They are completely omnidirectional in all planes. There are two aerials and at 90' to each other there is no interference. Theoretical separation of perfect antennas at 90' angles to each other is infinite, meaning zero interference of any kind.

2. I have opened three of them and they all have the same antenna configuration. Care to share where you saw one that was different?

The gain is near enough identical in all directions, bar the section to the front bottom which is blocked by the primary PCB.

I don't understand why your wiring is not suitable for Homeplugs. What's your reasoning?

The 615s factory firmware has AP mode

I bought a set of TP Link ones and couldn't get a connection, the house is pretty old so I went with that and returned them.

TP-Link Homeplugs have a good reputation. But I can't see an electrical reason why they wouldn't work. If you have ring mains installed in your house then at minimum the Powerlines will work on the same ring. Also if you have ring mains (which you do, I'm sure), then the signal will pass between two rings (upstairs/downstairs) so long as neither ring is isolated at the distribution box (switched off).

It would be a configurational thing, I suggest - or not putting the things directly into a wall socket. The fact that electricity flows to each socket on the ring is the guarantee that it'll work at least on that ring.
