Re: Stupid 999 calls
Having listened to a few stupid 999 calls i am often amazed at the ignorance of some people in the reasons they call 999. I don't even see a point in an advertising campaign as most of the idiots that call 999 for no reason are selfish people that feel they are important enough that 999 is there for them. I think there should be some form of financial penalty if you make a completely stupid 999 call would do far more good then an ad campaign. Also it might be helpful if local police gave out little cards with the local number to call to report problems as i don't know what the number for my station is and have always assumed yell.com would have it if i needed it.

Re: Stupid 999 calls
I thought there was already a penalty if you were found dialling 999 fraudulently?

Re: Stupid 999 calls
Given the number of people calling it for no good reason if there is it isn't used very often.

I don't think there is. I don't think they would for fear of putting real emergencies off (people with say, small pains in their chest may be put off calling 999 unless it turns into a full blown heart attack).

You can be done for abuse of the system and it is done on occasions but very rarely. It's more for sustained abuse of it rather than being stupid.

There ought to be an automatic fine for this sort of thing.

Anyone stupid enough to make such calls shouldn't be let near anything important IMHO. How about clearing out rubbish from urban rivers?...
God only knows what jobs, if any, idiots like this do when they're not clogging up the 999 system and putting lives at risk.
I saw one of those motorway cop shows the other day in which a hospital doctor was pulled up for doing over 100mph on a motorway. His wife was in the back of the car and between them they thought it was a good idea to let their young child roam around unsecured in the back seat. I dare say our medic would be greatly angered by the above story but how stupid was he? It just goes to show how some people, even well educated and highly trained, have no common sense.

Re: Stupid 999 calls
Thing is though what can the authorities do apart from releasing examples of stupid 999 calls .If a standard system of fines was introduced then that would stop some people phoning 999 in a real emergency
