Parental control is needed desperately, before governments step in with Draconian measures.

Agreed.Too many parents are just not as nosy as they need to be with their teenagers.Privacy is all very well when they are adults but while they are still children and a parent's responsibility then parents do have a right to read diaries and FB pages and no child needs an internet connected pc,laptop, computer etc in their bedroom.

Depends on their age maybe? I think teenagers would need to be granted some space, I guess it depends on their maturity.

Re: Cowards Blackmailing Young Women To Death On The Internet

Parental guidance and control is key IMHO however there are a great many parents out there who are irresponsible and can't manage their own lives let alone their offspring's. They don't really know or care what their kids are doing and are as incapable of giving sound advice as they are of setting a good example.

What always amazes me, though, is that our children have free access to more good information and advice than ever before yet still seem so naive when it comes to what they say and do on the internet. It's almost as if common sense has gone out of fashion and nobody wants to teach it anymore. I find it baffling.

I bet everyone of the children affected and preyed on are thought to be mature and adult by their parents.

The thing is that parents need to be hands on and it may mean invading a child's space.

A child yes but I think a teenager needs some privacy, I am not sure about parents reading the diary or private messages of a 15 year old for example. Would depend of circumstances of course.

Can you teach common sense? It's quite generic and sometimes people use it to describe why they won't have done something with the benefit of hindsight.

Also I have seen a great many adults who are naive, stupid, lack common sense or don't take advantage of the wealth of information out there. All of this is especially applicable to them using the Internet.

These children ARE teens..and they have no apparent protection possibly because of the privacy issue.

What do you deem children and what do you deem teens?

Bugger the kids privacy ,if i thought for one minuit i had to have a snoop on my kids facebook page or go through his history i would .There is far too much importance given to kids freedom and privacy and what you end up with is cases like this and kids being bullied on line by other kids all because they have too much freedom and privacy .They get that when they reach adulthood

So? We shouldn't use the more extreme examples to decide how much protection/privacy teenagers should have when using the internet.

I would deem 13/14/15/16 as teenage years but obviously it would depend on the circumstances, the parents trust in their child, and how knowledge they perceive their child to be on these matters. They should teach them and warm them but it cannot be healthy for a teenager of those ages not to have some privacy. They'll be talking to their friends, their crushes, their boyfriends/girlfriends and they'll be growing up. There is nothing wrong with some independence there.

It's obviously different if you have reason to suspect something.

However, most kids will not end up in these circumstances. We cannot have a generation growing up in a society that lives in constant fear of perverts, as if they lurk around every corner. They can be taught not to trust strangers with personal information/contact in the same way we all grew up warned not to get into a strangers car.

There is if they are targeted by perverts and what price privacy then. The problem with teens is that they think they can handle anything and anyone until they come up against adults who know how to manipulate the inexperienced.
You were a smart teen Damien but most teens are not.

Well of course we shouldn't have to teach "common sense" but yes I think you can help people acquire knowledge that some may call "common sense". The point I was making was that if the parents (and many other so called adults) have none, there's very little chance of their children having any either. Sadly, therefore, it seems to me the only way to address this is to teach our children, in some form or other, things which many older people would call "common sense" but which are increasingly less common.

It wasn't that long ago that we had no internet and no ready access to a world of information. There was often no easy way to verify what you were told. Now we have a generation who've grown up with devices that are capable of educating them yet they seem to be mainly used for texting, MP3s and pictures. I have a lot more sympathy for people who're naive and ignorant who haven't been brought up with such technology and free access to information than those who have. I don't extend any real blame to children however because as parents it's our job to teach them how to behave and look after themselves.

Its not exactly new.

When I was at school in my teens (14 or 15) we knew a of girl in our school year who got "paid". She knew exactly what she was doing. This was about 1976.
