STM idiosyncracies

Does anybody else have STM rules that don't stack up with the published ones?

I'm on L but it's full DOCSIS3 as I downgraded from 50Mbps when the area went badly oversubscribed and the projected fix date was months away.

On L it should be 10:00-15:00 3000MB 16:00-21:00 1500MB

I've found that I can download pretty much constantly during the morning period without the STM kicking in.

Yesterday I started a download close to 15:00. I got hit by the STM after 1500MB - sometime around 15:20 inside the supposed STM free period. The STM didn't lift until nearly 23:00.

Yeah sounds like what has happened to me a couple of times.

I reported it on the help & support forum and got ignored for my trouble. Which seems par for the course as far as VM and customer support/satisfaction are concerned.

Re: STM idiosyncracies

i never for one second thought that 1500-1600 was happy hour but I amazed nobody has corrected it. I would love to sue them for it for a breach of contract or something because it violates their "unlimited" claim and isn't covered under any fup or management systems they have described as being in place. I wouldnt expect to get anywhere with it but they need to be taught a lesson in customer service and that their are repurcusions for lack thereof

Re: STM idiosyncracies

Not sure why you would love to sue them for breach of contract, you would lose.

I'm sure I've seen it mentioned somewhere in the last few days (perhaps on the VM community forums) that 3-4 actually is meant to be STM'd, it just hasn't been updated in the literature yet.

Advertising standards rules apply then. Until they update their literature, they would be guilty of false advertising.

Re: STM idiosyncracies

I was miffed by the 1500 STM and the fact it exceeded 5 hours but for me the more interesting part was that I get no STM at all in the morning and wondered if anybody else has experienced that.

I would gladly exchange my current restrictions for no stm during the day and stm all night

I exchanged no STM day or night for no STM day or night and more speed for less money.

Re: STM idiosyncracies

I would too but the Openreach data has more bugs than a Superhub so although 7 doors up can order with predicted 69Mbps I can't. Hopefully this will be sorted. BT CEO office call me regularly with excuses.

Re: STM idiosyncracies

It isnt like stm where it is a fixed cap. Traffic shaping of p2p traffic flags it as low priority network traffic but if no one else is on the network you will still get full speed. My area is pretty good and there have been Friday evenings where i have been able to 7mbit off torrents

Not exactly but I wondered how long it would be before someone else noticed these anomalies….

I suspect (but have no way of publicly proving) this is due to the fact that STMv1.3 is limited to max 40 policy rules and earlier STM versions only had max 20.
Therefore depending on the version implemented on a specific DOCSIS3 chassis and number of concurrent service tiers(2,10M,10L,20XL, 50XXL, L30, XL60,100/120 etc) available on a specific CMTS being managed there could well be an insufficient number of policy rules to "manage" all subscribers. Therefore in those cases the low end tiers are not consistently managed to the levels/penalty periods indicated in the published tables!

Just been downloading 40GB off usenet with 30Gb of that after 10am.. Just finished the download with a constant 53Mbps and still no STM or traffic shaping even though the STM tables state 10Gb for my XXL50..

Re: STM idiosyncracies

Wow - I didn't know that there were any Linux ISOs that big

Seems that yours must be bust just like mine then - I bet your second period starts at 15:00 too. I can't be sure but I reckon that the 15:00-16:00 slot used to be a free for all as I certainly used to use it for downloading in the past.
