Nottingham workplace parking levy

Nottingham council have taken upon themselves to charge companies a parking levy for having 11 or more parking spaces for their staff. As if companies haven't got enough to worry about the council have buldosed this through despite massive opposition to it .It means that companies with 11 spaces will have to pay £3168 for 11 spaces over the year that's £288 for each space rising to £4180 ,£380 for each space by 2015 .This will either be charged to the workers or absorbed by the company .I can see this idea spreading to other councils making things worse for workers and companies .If Cameron wants to do something constructive then he should put a stop to Local Authorities comming up with barmy ideas like these

Re: Nottingham workplace parking levy

It's ridiculous. we can't go on with being charged for something and everything nearly everyday that comes.

something is going to blow soon. and it's not going to be the 252 litres of petrol in the back bedroom.

When half of the industrial units and business parks around the city are left standing empty in the next 2-3 years I hope that the half-wit who concocted this idea is satisfied. We have a large office in Nottingham and if this carries on it's not going to be there much longer.

I'm wondering if this applies to the council offices as well

This was an old Labour idea AFAIK, they even wanted us to be charged for using supermarket car parks.

Heaven forbid if that happened. They'd end up having to meet around the hoar apple tree twirling bits of straw in their mouths.

Re: Nottingham workplace parking levy

Companies with 11 or more spaces will charged regardless of how many of the spaces are used ,they could end up paying all that money for a empty car park if all there employees decide to get the bus to avoid the charge.

Enforcement seems a bit heavy handed as well.

Quote:
Registering false details or blocking council officers will be a criminal matter but not having a licence will be a civil offence, firms have been told.
These breaches will be punishable with penalty charge notices. Criminal offences will be dealt with by the courts and will also be examined by the police for possible fraud.
The council confirmed automatic number plate recognition technology will be used to monitor car parks when making some checks.

Re: Nottingham workplace parking levy

Is this to ofset the tram costs.

Well if this similar to my local council they did charge the council for parking spaces slapped it on the public sector workers. This was there own private car park too got charged.

All its done cause massive issue street parking around council offices bottom end workers could not pay neearly £500 think it was.

Some of which had to use own vehicle to jobs they do so could not avoid it yet still was told to pay.

Its causing right mess.

Re: Nottingham workplace parking levy

Yup, we start paying from April 1st (wish it was a joke)
Our company have agreed to pay 50% of the levy & WE have to pay the rest or park on the street. About 40% of the workers have agreed to this payment myself included.
NCC has sold off the tram system this levy was put in place for and the money raised now will be used to update the train & bus stations.
I'm pretty peeved at having to pay as my cost's are spiraling out of control to the point where I will be no longer be able to afford to go to work.

The various reports i have seen and read on this suggest that nobody was in favour of this apart from council officials who ignored everyone and railroaded it through

Yup & god forbid it works out for NCC because this will be rolled out across the country & every city/town will implement it.

Re: Nottingham workplace parking levy

Whilst I can understand that people are upset about this, but £380 per year (in 2015) per space is about £7 per week - if I take my car into Leeds City Centre, the cheapest car park I can get is £9 per day.

It's the principle as well though Hugh .From the companies point of view they are already paying for the space in business rates and rent because in many cases the council own the land the building is on and charge ground rent to the companies based on the size of the land ,so in effect the are paying twice for the same thing .From a workers point of view having parking at your place of work is a big bonus and quite often helps attract workers to the company because as you say city center parking is at a premium .
