Wootton Bassett is to be the first town in more than 100 years to get the title of "Royal" in recognition of its efforts to honour the UK's war dead.
|
A generous recognition.Well deserved.

An excellent idea and a fitting tribute to those who stand in silence as a mark of respect to our gallant fallen servicemen.
It always fills me with emotion to see the masses of silent people paying tribute to those who give their lives for us.
I only wish I could be there before it ends.

Great news -lets hope the traitors stay away and spew their bile filled hatred elsewhere in future .

So i wonder which town if any will take over when they start using Brize Norton.
There is always one
Quote:
Graham Smith from Republic, which campaigns for a democratic alternative to the monarchy, said although his group shared the nation's respect for the armed forces he disagreed with the renaming of Wootton Bassett.
"The country can be proud of its armed forces without tying them up with royalty.
A repatriation through Wootton Bassett Leamington Spa and Tunbridge Wells also have the Royal title as part of their name
"It is time we should be removing 'Royal' from town names, not adding to them."

Re: Wootton Bassett to get 'Royal' title in war dead honour
Apparently the likely route from Birze Norton to John Radcliffe is via the A40 so no towns to go through. It's what made the Wooton Basset spontanious memorial tributes so remarkable, that they were also unique.

Re: Wootton Bassett to get 'Royal' title in war dead honour
A very fitting reward for the people of this small town who have done so much to help the families and friends of the fallen servicemen and women. Such a stalwart show of respect deserved to be publicly acknowledged and I can't think of a better way than has been done to-day.

Re: Wootton Bassett to get 'Royal' title in war dead honour
I'm sure I read a while ago they they didn't want a "Royal" title.
But I guess that was BS.
But they 100% deserve it.

As a republican it doesn't matter to me one way or the other, but if the good people of Wooton Basset are happy to have this recognition then thats all that matters, irrespective if your for or against the monarchy its an honour for the people really, not the town.

I know this is going to make me unpopular but....are they really giving their lives for us?
Don't get me wrong, they've got more balls than I ever will and I certainly support any mark of respect to those who die in battle but when people say "they're fighting for our country" and "giving their lives for us", there's something wrong there.
They're not fighting for our country - we're not at war with anyone. Forget the "War on Terror", that's just a soundbite and is no more valid than a domestic "war on drugs".
Sure they're fighting a conflict, and many are tragically being killed as a result. They deserve recognition and respect for that and I wear a poppy with pride around each Rememberance day. But fighting for our country? Giving their lives for us? I don't buy that.
