Question regarding SKY broadband

I've just joined SKY but need to wait almost 3 weeks before getting broadband installed.

SKY claim I'll receive speeds between 12Mb and 18Mb. I live 2500 feet, just under half a mile away from the local BT exchange. I can see the roof of the building from my bedroom.

How far away from the exchange do you need to be before it greatly effects your internet speed? Am I close enough to receive good speeds?

Virgin Media totally dominate where I live in terms of TV, phone and internet. The problem for many is there's loads of hills and trees which have effected peoples viewing experience with SKY. My town only has 10,000 residents. Again if there is a small amount of people using the exchange, will this help to increase my broadband speed?

As you may have noticed I'm a total noob when it comes to broadband via exchange.

Any info or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Try this

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/br...r?address=true

Report back what speeds it says for BT ADSL

Thanks for the link. It says I'm 620 metres away from the exchange and can expect speeds of 7.5Mb

Re: Question regarding SKY broadband

Here is what is says:

You are connected to the Boness telephone exchange.

ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
Your exchange is not yet enabled for ADSL2+ services
According to BT Wholesale, houses at your postcode should be able to support a 7.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.

Standard ADSL RAG results
You can receive 2Mbps ADSL
You can receive 1Mbps ADSL
You can receive 512kbps ADSL
You can receive 256kbps ADSL
You are approximately 638 metres from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!

Re: Question regarding SKY broadband

Don't worry that means your exchange isn't enabled yet for BT's ADSL 2 service , I've checked and your exchange is LLU enabled for Sky so expect somewhere in the region Sky have quoted you , I would think nearer your top end. Try and plug your router into your master socket that's the point where the BT phonleline comes in.

Re: Question regarding SKY broadband

Take with a big pinch of salt. Samknows says at 1.56km I can expect 2Mbps. I actually get 7Mbps.

Try the "speed in my area" link at http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk to see what your neighbours get.

Most people seem to get within Sky's estimated range now , mine was 6-12mb my line currently gets throughput of 9.5mb on a 2.36km line.

Re: Question regarding SKY broadband

Cheers guys. I've checked the broadband and speed checker however the speeds for both Virgin and SKY in street seem very dubious.

I think I've asked this before however what kind of upload speeds can I expect? Between 150kbps and 200kbps would be great however I expect 100kbps to be nearer the truth.
