Can connect wirelessly, but not through ethernet cable

Hi everyone,

Well, as briefly as I can:

We already had tv, phone and broadband with Virgin (at our old house), and moved house on Wednesday this week. Virgin came out and got us up and running the next day, which was great. Tv and phone work fine but I have a problem with the broadband. The modem links to the tower of my PC and I have a laptop that I use to connect to the internet wirelessly. Quite strangely, I am able to use the laptop and connet wirelessly, but I cannot connect the PC / tower (i.e. with the cable connection from the modem to the tower). Can't understand it at all, and the Virgin helpline didn't offer much assistance I must say! .

Problem is: my wife works from home and needs to have the internet available on the PC pronto, every hour is money down the drain .

Hope this all makes sense, and a massive thanks to anyone that tries to help me out.

Thanks in advance.

Duncan

Welcome Duncan. Can you confirm if you have one of the new superhubs that are combined modem/router?

Hi David,

Yes, it is. In my old house I had the modem and then a seperate box so that it was wireless, if that makes sense? But when he came in to get us up and running with all of the services, he said that I now only needed one box as it did both functions at the same time (shame I didn't insist on him staying to get the internet actually working!)Could this be the issue then do you think?

Re: Can connect wirelessly, but not through ethernet cable

Could be a damaged cable. Make sure where the network cable is connected at both ends there is are lights on. Can't remember if the hub has lights on its network ports. Unplug one end and see if the computer complains about a network cable being unplugged.

One superhub specific thing I can think of is that the desktop is trying to use an ip address in the 192.168.1.x range, but the superhub uses the 192.168.0.x range.

If you open the network adapter properties: If you have Vista/7 search on the start menu for network, open the network and sharing centre, click change adapter settings, double click the network adapter, click properties. Then double click the IP4 or TCP/IPv4 line and click the obtain an IP address automatically.

I actually love you, whether you are a man or a woman!

Followed the instructions about the ip address and now I am connected (my wife will think I am a computer wizard, but we both know the truth!) Shame that the tech department that I was on the 'phone / holding for over half and hour last night, couldn't help me!

Thanks a million my friend.
