distorted pictures on catch up tv from virgin

Just lately when watching catch up tv there is a lot of distortion when there is anything fast moving on the screen.
I have had it checked but no problem was found with my box. Is anyone else getting this problem?

Re: distorted pictures on catch up tv from virgin

Are you sure you dont have any post processing turned on on your TV, I have an older Samsung that has a bug of not turning some of the processing off (no matter what I do or what it says in the setting menu) and I get tearing and checker-boarding on fast moving content.

I've always found pq variable with ondemand and some of the lower resolution programmes do smear when there is fast motion.

I think your thinking about bit-rate rather than resolution but maybe your right and they are seeing compression artifacts.

I stand corrected. That is what I meant.

Re: distorted pictures on catch up tv from virgin

This is a known fault with BBC iPlayer content via Virgin, since about December last year..

I think complaints are probably best directed at the BBC, who don't seem to be in any great rush to resolve this problem. My humble opinion!!

corrie, emmerdale etc on catch up are a lot noisier as well, it's almost fact that you don't get broadcast quality on demand.

Agreed, but you try watching any fast moving scene on iPlayer OD - some shows obviously worse than others but any football highlights program or "So you think you can dance" are just ridiculous for jerking. At the very least the BBC seem to be using some very dodgy software to encode for Virgin, it should always pixxelate rather than jump video frames IMO.

Re: distorted pictures on catch up tv from virgin

It doesnt seem to just affect BBC programs
Just watched midsomer murders on catch up tv, was fine for the 1st 30 mins and then it started messing about, like digital tv does with a very weak signal, blocking freezing etc, then it stopped and was ok, then went again after another 10 mins, but was fine for the rest It did same thing this morning on something else.
I have noticed the frame jumping problem on other on demand programs not just BBC stuff, like warner TV on TV choice.
Sometimes it's so bad it makes the show completley unwatchable, and other times it doesnt do it at all ! so frustrating as it seems to be random, at least if it did it at certain times you could put it down to usage or something !

I've always took it as read that all VOD is barely watchable (You Tube quality)

I thought everyone understood that so I'm at a loss as to what the thread is about

That said, I dont watch much VOD - mainly cuz the quality is poor - sounds like it has improved

I can't honestly say I find catch-up that bad , its not broadcast quality but its certainly not as bad as you make it to be.
